Castles
There are over one hundred castles in the Aosta Valley and of these the three largest are Fènis, Verrès and
Issogne, all belonging to the Challant, the Valley's wealthiest and most powerful family. These castles typify
different successive, partially superimposed kinds of fortress, representing the evolution of military
architecture. The castle of Fènis, the oldest of the three, was built around 1330 on the remains of a previous
fortress, and its extensions are an excellent example of this kind of transformation. The Verrès Castle, slightly
more recent, is an example of monobloc construction, for exclusively defensive purposes, while the castle of
Issogne, begun at the end of the fifteenth century , is a wonderful example of lordly dwelling.

History of Italy - WikipediA
Italy's history is perhaps the most important one for the cultural and social development of the Mediterranean
area as a whole. The country has been host to important human activities in prehistoric times, and therefore
archaeological sites of note can be found in many regions: Latium and Tuscany, Umbria and Basilicata. After
Magna Graecia, the Etruscan civilisation and especially the Roman Empire that came to dominate this part of
the world for many centuries, came the medieval Humanism and the Renaissance that further helped to shape European philosophy and art.

Music, Culture & Entertainment The language spoken by the biggest part of the population is Franco-Provençal, a regional language that used
to be spoken more generally in Savoy, French-speaking Switzerland, Lyon area and the Jura and was formerly one of the original patois. In a way it sounds a bit like how people speak in Quebec, Canada.

Aosta Valley Aosta Valley is the smallest Italian region and is located at the "hub" of the Alps, surrounded by Europe's four
highest mountains (Mont Blanc-Monte Bianco, Matterhorn-Cervino, Monte Rosa and Gran Paradiso), all over
four thousand metres high. The region is like an island among the mountains, and, over the centuries, this has
conditioned its history, language, and administrative and political life and encouraged the development of an original collective identity.
