Epirus / Ipirus - mountainous area - winter sports possible
Rugged area. Dominated by the Pindos range and divided in four areas: West, East, North and South. North Epirus
includes the main Pindos mountains with the peaks of Smólikas (2637 meters), Gamíla, Gramós and Astraka. It also includes the beautiful Víkos Gorge, a must for hikers in the summer and winter. West Epirus
includes Igoumenítsa, the main port of entry for those arriving by ferry from Italy. In addition,
here we find unexplored beaches (yes, they do exist in Greece) and plenty of camping opportunities.
East Epirus includes Ioáninna, the capital, as well as Métsovo, and other beautiful towns and villages. The
Katára pass (at 1705 meters) is also here which is being slowly replaced by a tunnel to the detriment of the wild life that exists in the area. South Epirus
includes the low lying areas and towns such as Préveza and Arta as well as famous Párga.
Epiros is a very hard and cold environment in the winter and most of the villages get cut off from supplies.
The only communication is with helicopters and every winter, Greece is full of stories about these villages. Prefectures in Epirus: Arta, Ioannina, Preveza and Thesprotia

History of Greece
Independent in 1829 from the Ottoman Empire
Greece has a history stretching back more than 4.000 years. The people of the mainland, called Hellenes,
organised great naval and military expeditions, and explored the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, going as
far as the Atlantic Ocean and the Caucasus Mountains. One of those expeditions, the siege of Troy, is
narrated in the first great European literary work, Homer's Iliad. Numerous Greek settlements were founded
throughout the Mediterranean, Asia Minor and the coast of North Africa as a result of travels in search of new markets.

Music, Arts & Culture, Events in Greece
Ancient Greek Music This site contains all published fragments of Ancient Greek music which contain more than a few scattered
notes. All of them are recorded under the use of tunings whose exact ratios have been transmitted to us by
ancient theoreticians (of the Pythagorean school, most of them cited by Ptolemaios). Instruments and speed are chosen by the author. The exact sound depends on your hard- and software.
Rembetika Music
Rembetika music is the music of the Greek Underground. It originated in the hashish dens of Pireaus and
Thessaloniki with the forced immigration of 2 million Greek refugees from Asia Minor. It evolved into Greek Popular Music.
