EPIRUS  >  GREECE   >  INDEX

Holidays in Epirus.

Epirus is a province in northwestern Greece.

Prefectures in Epirus : Arta, Ioannina, Preveza, Thesprotia.

Cities in Epirus : Arta, Ioannina, Igoumenitsa, Konitsa, Metsovo, Paramythia, Parga, Preveza, Syvota.

Rugged area. Dominated by the Pindos range and divided in four areas: West, East, North and South.

Epirus is rich in wonderful ancient sites to visit, such as the impressive amphitheatre at Dodoni, one of the oldest in Greece. There are also numerous spectacular Monasteries, caves and museums, enough to satisfy the appetite of the most dedicated ancient Grecophile.

Epiros is also a very hard and cold environment in the winter and most of the villages get cut off from supplies. The only communication is with helicopters and every winter, Greece is full of stories about these villages.

Capital city is Ioannina at lake Pamvotis [ Pamvotida ].

Travelux  -  quality villa specialist for Greece - Villas with pool in Zagoria
Tucked away deep in the Pindos Mountains, North of Ioannina, there is a part of Epirus known as Zagoria, a place of immense natural beauty. A vast proportion is heavily wooded, surrounded by a truly exciting geography, showing a remarkable diversity for such a relatively small area. Imposing mountains, luxuriant valleys are interspersed with rivers, waterfalls and streams. Towering cliffs and breathtaking ravines are around every bend, each one steeper and deeper than the next. None make a more lasting impression than the beautiful Vikos Gorge does - reputedly, Europe's largest ravine.

 Discover Epirus

Region of Epirus

North Epirus includes the main Pindos mountains with the peaks of Smólikas (2637 meters), Gamíla, Gramós and Astraka. It also includes the beautiful Víkos Gorge, a must for hikers in the summer and winter.
West Epirus includes Igoumenítsa, the main port of entry for those arriving by ferry from Italy. In addition, here we find unexplored beaches (yes, they do exist in Greece) and plenty of camping opportunities.
East Epirus includes Ioáninna, the capital, as well as Métsovo, and other beautiful towns and villages. The Katára pass (at 1705 meters) is also here which is being slowly replaced by a tunnel to the detriment of the wild life that exists in the area.
South Epirus includes the low lying areas and towns such as Préveza and Arta as well as famous Párga.

Vikos Gorge  -  Europe's Grand Canyon
It is nationally famed for its awesome and dramatic landscape, its wily but wealthy inhabitants of 100 years before and the beautiful natural stone and slate roofed villages. The Vikos Gorge was a source of the wealth to the region. Herbalists and Doctors would collect the plants, fruits and seeds to make special potions to aid good health. They travelled across Europe and Asia Minor to trade their wares and return with goods and money. Schools and churches were erected and the interiors adorned with colourful icons. Houses were built like fortresses to protect their women and children. Today the gorge is home to many birds, butterflies and flowers.
