Ionian Islands (Rough Guide Travel Guides) - by John Gill, Nick Edwards (Editor)
This guide to the Ionian Islands opens with a 16 page full-colour introduction, which highlights "20 things not to
miss" from windsurfing in Vassaliki to hiking the Corfu Trail. There is coverage of dozens of towns and
resorts and practical guidance on getting off the beaten track, from the mountains of Cephalonia to remote
Corfu beaches. The guide also provides details of the network of ferry and bus services and gives tips on how to plan your trip.
The Ionian islands comprise a core group of six – Corfu [ Kérkyra ], Paxí [ Paxos ], Lefkádha [ Lefkas ], Itháki [
Ithaca ], Kefalloniá [ Cephallonia ] and Zákynthos [ Zante ]. Kathira, isolated at the foot of the Peloponnese,
along with its satellite Andikathira, is officially part of the Ionian group, but we haven't covered them in this
Guide, as they bear few similarities to the core group of islands and share no transport connections with them. Paperback 320 pages (August 7, 2003); Publisher: Rough Guides

Antikythira
Antikythira is is the name of a isolated group of small islands between Kythira and Crete. See Kythira.info, Kythera.gr, Mechanismus von Antikythera und Antikythera Mechanism Research Project.
Antipaxi
Erikoussa - Othonic Islands, 25 km from Corfu - Ferry connection with Corfu
Erikoussa is the northernmost of the Ionian Islands. Northernmost village in the prefecture of Corfu.
Ithaca / Ithaki East of Kefalonia [ Cephalonia ] separeted by a channel 2 to 4 kilometers wide. From steep and bare region on
the west side to a green gentle shoreline on the east of the island. The capital Vathi with the red-roofed houses lies at the end of Molos Bay.
Ithaki is known to the word as the home of Odysseus who wandered for years before he returned to his island kingdom.
Kefalonia - the largest of the Ionian Islands
Green rocks plunge suddenly into the deep blue waters. Picturesque villages and small beautiful towns
highlighted by old mansions and "humble" farmhouses, a little further over, the ruins of some ancient city.
Kefalonia has been justly called the island of contrasts: Roman, Venetian, and Byzantine ruins, side by side
with famous beaches. The capital Argostoli is where the sea pours into spectacular swallow-holes and
disappears endlessly into subterranean tunnels forming a rare geological phenomenon. The water reappears
at Lake Melissani, an incredible semi-underground lake of clear turquoise and indigo water. Nearby is the
Drogorati cave, a large stalagmitic cavern of rare harbor, that has escaped the earthquakes and retains the old style buildings.
Cities : Argostoli, Assos, Fiskardo, Lixouri, Poros, Sami. Most important community on the island is Argostoli on the southwest coast. See Kefalonia.net.gr. Tourism Greece - Kefalonia and Kefalonitis.com [ greek language ].
Corfu - the most popular of the Ionian Islands
It is a very green island and a mixture of the civilizations that have passed through at various times. The town
impresses and charms the visitor with its two forts, narrow streets, tall houses, arcades, Venetian-built
Town Hall, church to Saint Spyridon, the island's patron saint, flower-filled gardens, and balconies with their
superb wrought-iron fences. Flooded with sights, Corfu is a small paradise on Earth. from Palaiokastritsa to
Kanoni , from the Achillion to Pontikonissi and the northern coast, one will find crystal clear water, scenic
coves, greenery and vegetation that 'sinks' into the deep blue sea. On this cosmopolitan island it is easy to combine relaxation with intense night life.
Kythira
Kythera, set south of the Peloponnese, is an island whose history goes back to the second millennium BC,
when it was a Minoan naval base. The island also served as 'resting' place for the Phoenicians and later the
Myceneans. The attention of the visitor is bound to be captured by the steep, cliffy coast line, the cycladic
architecture and the expansive vegetation. Of the small towns strewn on the island, Agia Pelagia, Hora and
Milopotamos are certainly worth a visit, while Potamos boasting a pine forest and a beautiful cobble-stone paved square is not to be missed. See Kythira.info.
Lefkas / Lefkada Lefkada is a mountainous island surrounded by the deep blue Ionian sea but so close to mainland Greece, that
you can visit it by crossing a sort bridge by a car or bus. The scenery changes quickly as you move from the
east to west side of the island. The east side has dense vegetation and smooth shores. The west side is
steep but filled with endless sandy beaches. The capital of the island, Lefkada, is a beautiful town build near
the harbour and the famous castle of Agia Mavra founded in 1300 by J. Orsini, a Frankish knight. Other
interesting places in the island are Nidri [ the most popular spot in Lefkada ], which, according to the
archaelogist Dorpfeld, was Homer's Ithaca, Poros with the pebbled beach of Mikro Yialo, Vassiliki, Agios
Nikolaos a traditional fishing village, Agios Nikitas and Karia. Also of remarkable beauty are the mountan
villages of Athani, Episkopu, Kalamitsi. By using a ferry you can explore the small island of Meganissi and
have a view of the famous island of Skorpios, belonging to the tycoon Onassis, with the crystal green waters
. Lefkada will impress anyone with its wild beauty, picturesque villages, sandy beaches and gorgeous scenary.
Mathraki - small islet off the coast of Corfu
Green island. Great beaches and nature filled forest. Great for sailing. You can travel to Mathraki by boat from Sidari in Corfu.
Othoni
One of the remotest and one of the most unspoilt Greek islands. It's north west of Corfu island and one of
three islands that make up the group known as the Diapontioi Islands. The western coast of Othoni is also the most western point of the Greek state.
The beaches and the sea around the coast of Othoni truly reflects the picture postcard expectations that
visitors dream of: fine white to yellow sand that's clean, gently lapped by crystal clear, turquoise, green and
blue glittering wavelets. Stunning rock formations and dramatic cliffs, lush sub-tropical scenery with an abundance of flowering and scented shrubs and trees.
Looking for a spot in Greece that doesn't have any rowdy bars, noisy nightclubs and absolutely no tourist shops.... This is the place.
Paxi
Of the main six Ionian islands Paxi is the smallest., full of impressive white boulders, beautiful beaches, small
coves and sea caves. The capital Gaios at the east side of the island is a a picturesque village with traditional
houses and narrow streets. At the nourth lies the seaside village of Laka which is build on a bay whose coasts are covered with olives and pines.
Zakhyntos / Zante - southernmost island of the Ionian.
Zakinthos has its own way of enchanting the visitor and engraving itself in his memory. Its is not easy to
forget the emerald sea, the pine covered hills, or the hospitable and openhearted inhabitants of Zante, as it is
otherwise called. Up high, above the modern town with its beautiful buildings in the typical Zakintian style, is
the Venetian castle; churches are everywhere in the city of St. Dionysios, the island's patron saint. Small
coffee shops and picturesque villages are to be found among the olive and almond trees, in or around fields planted with vines and vegetables.
History of Ionian Islands
History Ionian Islands - see Wikipedia The islands were settled by Greeks at an early date, possibly as early as 1000 BC, and certainly by the 9th
century BC. The early Eretrian settlement at Kerkyra was ...
