Crete has always been a place apart, especially in May - an extraordinary landscape of unspoilt beaches and rolling hills dotted with olive trees, thyme and wild flowers, and backed by snow capped mountains. It looked rather different on 20th May 1941 when German airborne forces descended on Crete.
