Out of the most intensive green area in Girona, "Gironès" is the most varied, diverse and full of contrast. It is because its beauty is presented prodigiously as "Santuari dels Àngels ", where Dali and Gala married, climbers of "les Gavarres", the "valley of Llémena" and a long line of farm houses, hermitages and fountains, the hereditary richness of old Girona… is a singular sample of a generous nature.
This county can be found in an area situated near sea and mountain. "Gironès" has all the virtues of the municipal towns which make up the county showing off its entrepreneurial spirit. Of all the towns it is necessary to say that everyone contains its own enchanting and emblematic differences: fairs, local fiestas, events and traditions. Traditional home cooking can be enjoyed along with products from the land and our most elaborate and creative dishes can be tasted.

History of Catalonia

The territory that is now Catalonia was first settled during the Middle Palaeolithic. It was colonized by Ancient Greeks and Carthaginians and, like the rest of the Iberian Peninsula, participated in the pre-Roman Iberian culture. With the rest of Iberia, it was part of the Roman Empire, followed by Visigothic rule. In the eighth century it was part of Moorish (Muslim-ruled) al-Andalus, but was conquered within a century by the expanding Carolingian Empire

Throughout the year numerous popular festivals are held in Catalonia. The festivals follow a cycle and are  based mainly on the two solstices : Christmas in winter plus the Eve of Saint John at midsummer and the two equinoxes: one marked by the Carnival, Holy Week and Easter in spring, and the other by the wine harvest and the Feast of All Saints in autumn.
