Holidays Minorca.
Part of the
Balearic Islands in the Mediteranean, about 100 km from the coast of the Costa Blanca.
Two regions in Minorca : Tramontana in the north and Migjorn in the south.
The charm of Minorca
lies in its rough grassy fields and dense woods, sprawling over gentle hills and cascading from steep cliffs. The terrain reveals tiny market gardens renowned for the intense flavour of their produce
and vast areas given to cattle and sheep in rural splendour. Its cuisine is as flavoursome as it is unpretentious and authentic - sea-fresh lobsters, gorgeous prawns, pan-fried fish, grilled lamb,
seasoned with hillside herbs, not to mention heavenly breads and mountains of tangy, local cheese. Menorca is an perfect haven, sweet in spring, sensual in summer and amorous in autumn. It offers
spectacular walks, silky beaches, satin coves and turquoise shallows lying next to deep blue ports
Main cities: Maó [ capital city ] and Ciutadella.

Mahon - capital city of Menorca - Municipality Mahon Graced with Georgian architecture. Has given the world mayonnaise, which the French, not always known
for veracity, claim as their own! A long and distinguished culinary tradition rejoices in waterfront restaurants and lively bars, where ingenious snacks can be consumed with elegant glasses of wine
Ciutadella de Menorca - town and a municipality in the western end of Minorca
Former capital city. The name means "citadel". It is one of the two main cities in the island, along with Maó.
Originally founded by the Carthaginians. Worth seeing is the old town. Ciutadella's town hall is the former palace of the Arab governor and later served as a royal palace under the Aragonese. See Municipality Ciutadella de Menorca
Alaior The municipality of Alaior streches to the sea in the south. The principal beaches are: Cala en Porter,
Calescoves and Son Bou, the longest beach in Menorca. The town's historic and cultural heritage is predominantly religious in nature: the parish churches of Santa
Eulàlia and Sant Diego (with old Franciscan cloister), the Hermitage of Sant Pere and the Chapel of Gràcia.
Es Mercadal - Municipality of Es Mercadal
The Town of Es Mercadal is located in the centre of the island at the junction of the two main roads running
east to west and north to south; it lies at the foot of the Toro Mountain (358 m), the highest point on Minorca,
where the sanctuary Mother of God is located. This figure is the patron saint of Minorca and the place is the spiritual centre for Minorcans.
Surrounded by rural country homes, the town of Es Mercadal was sustained throughout centuries by its agricultural and animal husbandry traditions.
Es Mercadal is known for its cuisine. You can taste typical Minorcan dishes at different restaurants
throughout the town. Some of the most delicious include: oliaigo (a cold tomato-based soup) with figs, stuffed
aubergine, stuffed courgette, stuffed squid, etc. And the bakery is not to be overlooked! We have typical
biscuits called amargos and carquinyols and caramelised nougat, which are all made in the traditional way.
There is a small, family industry that produces avarques, the typical sandals formerly worn by the country folk (pagesia).
Es Migjorn Gran - Municipality Es Migjorn Gran
Es Migjorn Gran is a small municipality in southern Minorca. The village has managed to preserve the traditional
charm of Minorca. Here visitors can find complete tranquillity, evident in each of its narrow streets. The whitewashed houses, most of which have only two storeys, form a community of great beauty.
The District takes the town of Es Migjorn Gran, the residential complex Sant Tomás and the beaches of Trebaluger, Cala Fustam, Cala Escorxada, Binigaus, Sant Adeodat, Sant Tomàs and Atalis.
Es Castell - a small municipality in eastern Minorca - Municipality Es Castell The town was founded in 1771 by British Col. Patrick Mackellar and was originally called Georgetown in honour of King George III.
Es Castell celebrates its Foundation Day on 1 June with 18th century themed festivities, in which the
Municipality itself, St. Philip's Castle Foundation, Son Granot and other institutions participate.
Ferreries - Township of Ferreries
In this township is the old Castle of St. Agatha, on the road to the north coast, Camí Alocs dets. This castle
was the last resting place of the Moors in the island, and the legend says that the Moorish prince galloped so
hard down the hill on which the castle was standing that it still bears the marks of the horseshoes on it.
Ferreries extends from north to south of the island, with beautiful beaches on both boundaries.
Sant Lluís - municipality on the tip of south-east Minorca See Municipality Sant Lluís
Bay of Son Saura - in the north, near Son Parc
very beautifull beach resort at the north coast.
Fortaleza de Isabel II The Fortress of Isabel II was built between 1848 and 1875 after a lot of pressure by the British, who were
threatening to return to the island in order to use it as a base in their defensive operations against the French. These two powers were disputing naval control of the Mediterranean.
La Fortaleza de Isabel II o Fortaleza de la Mola es un complejo militar situado en una península en la entrada del puerto de Mahón, Menorca.
Castle of Santa Águeda [ in Arab: Sent Agaiz - in the municipality of Ferreries
Located over an elongated plateau, called Santa Àgueda, 264 m above sea level. The Castle was built over
an ancient Roman castra by the Arabs, when Manûrqa (Minorca) was part of the Caliph of Cordoba. Exact
date of construction isn't known. In 1287, it became the last standpoint of resistance by the Arab inhabitants when the island was invaded by King Alfonso III of Aragon.
The castle can be accessed by an ancient Roman road.

History of Minorca
Minorca was annexed to the Caliphate of Cordoba in 903. The island was conquered by Alfons III of Aragon
on January 17, 1287, Minorca's national day, and until 1344 was part of the Kingdom of Majorca, before being
annexed to Aragon and thus becoming later part of Spain. During the 16th century, Turkish naval attacks destroyed Mahon and the then capital Ciutadella.

town's streets and squares are filled with horses, music, religious ceremonies, hustle and bustle, merry-making and people; those three days are eagerly anticipated by everyone in the district.
