Cities in Apulia : Bari, Brindisi, Foggia, Lecce and Taranto are the capitals of the respective provinces.
If Italy is known as the "boot", Apulia is the heel of the boot. The peculiarity of this region is the seaside [ length about 760 km ] that makes Apulia one of the most popular places for tourists from all over the world. The climate of Apulia is characterized by the region's closeness to the sea, the rich vegetation and the almost total lack of mountains. The weather is typically Italy with warm winters and very hot summers. Rain, quite scarce, is mostly concentrated during autumn and winter what means that summer is, besides hot, also very dry.

Bari - Capital City of Apulia and seaport
A long, straight road, the wide and well-lit Corso Vittorio Emanuele, divides the city into two distinct parts as if
drawing the boundaries between two different periods in history. The memory of the courage of Medieval
sailors lives on today in the maze of alleys and courtyards that characterises the Old Town, which jealousy
guards its renowned monuments. It stands in stark contrast to the industrious, dynamic, modern city , with its
long, wide roads along which have risen the many buildings which bear testimony to the city's prodigious urban development.

handicrafts and traditions. A land kissed by the sun, a territory generous in nature, art and history, a beautiful
coast, altogether made to measure for "holidaying", whether you prefer to laze on the beach or follow new
paths where you can discover caves, castles, cathedrals, rock dwellings, trulli and old manor houses.
Among thousands of enchanting spots, the tourist will also find the warmth of authentic hospitality, the
comfort of modern and varied hotel facilities, the pleasure of carrying out his favourite activities in his free
time, the enjoyment of getting to know a long series of old traditions, the enticement of its authentic and particularly tasty cuisine.

balanced between the Mar Grande and the Mar Piccolo. In the northern part of the city there are the calm
waters of the Mar Piccolo, at the southern end the grandeur of the Mar Grande bursting in the Gulf of
Taranto (on the Ionian Sea). The secret of its glamour is there, in the Small and Big Sea. The swing bridge is
the connection between the past and the present, the island of the cittą vecchia and Taranto. It is mainly in the
old town and in the National Museum that one can find evidence of the glorious history of Taranto, colony of
Sparta and capital of the Magna Graecia. Taranto was founded around 700 B.C. The advantage of the city's
extraordinary location helped reach its period of biggest prosperity in the IVth c. B.C. Because of its strategic
position Taranto suffered from the invasion of Bizantines, Ostrogoths, Saracens,Normans, Swabians,
Angevins and Aragoneses. Their domination left a mark on the architecture and civilization of Taranto and its
"cittą vecchia". After Napoleon Taranto went into decline until it was liberated in 1860 by the troops of
Garibaldi. In 1866 the Italian government turned the town back into the biggest Italian naval base.
