Lanaken is situated in the extreme south of the Meuse border area, 5 km from the center of Maastricht in the Netherlands. Limburg is crossed by the Albert Canal, and has historically been a major coal-mining area. Most of Limburg was included in the prince-bishopric of Liège until 1792, and was part of the Dutch province of Limburg from 1815-1839.
