History Belgian Coast

Around 1778, the first beach huts appeared on the beach of Blankenberge. In 1784 Emperor Josef II gave permission to an Englishman to sell refreshments on the beach of Oostende.

The construction of the Mechelen-Oostende railway line in 1839 brought the coast within easier reach. Seven years later the Oostende-Dover ferry line was inaugurated.
