Sunset Faaway Holidays
Bali is a magical island of brooding volcanoes, lush jungles and vast green rice paddies and terraces. Of
improbably ornate temples and gentle, smiling Hindu people. Of countless religious festivals, colourful
traditional ceremonial dances and 'gamelan' music whose haunting rhythms, once heard, will never be
forgotten. And, of course, of palm-edged beaches whose white and volcanic sands are reason enough for a holiday here . . .
The fertile paddy-fields and lush hillslopes of the Bali interior extend an inviting variation on the Bali theme - for
here there are a small and select collection of sophisticated little hotel hideaways for the discerning
international visitor. Ideal places for those wanting to beat a retreat to a private and serene world far from the
everyday. A few days' stay (or longer) can easily be combined with your beach holiday in Bali or Lombok.

Beach, good for a mix of local colour and quality hotels; or to Nusa Dua, a tourist enclave with perhaps the
best beaches on the island. Legian is the quieter extension to Kuta and especially good for surfers. Bali has a
justified reputation for beach hawkers: they are becoming more controlled at both Kuta and Sanur but they are least intrusive at Nusa Dua.
Lovina - North Bali coastal town
Sanur - Bali's first beach resort with a mile long stretch of sandy beach
It is also Bali's largest traditional village and home to the temple of Ratu Ayu of Singgi, the much feared spirit of Sanur's fabled Black Barong.
The village of Sanur is also an ideal place for snorkelling as the beach is protected by a coral reef.
Singaraja [ North Bali ] - Bali's second city but far more orderly than the capital, Denpasar
This was the seat of Dutch power and one of the few places left on the island with visible reminders of their
European influence. The beach resort of Lovina lies to the west with its distinctive black sand beaches. Early
risers can take an optional boat ride from here to see dolphins in the bay (sightings are not guaranteed but
likely). Also to the west are the Hot Springs at Banjar: relax in the bathing pools surrounded by a tropical
landscaped garden. To the east of Singaraja, is Beji temple dedicated to irrigation with distinctive sculptured
panels. Further east still, at Yeh Sanih freshwater springs are channelled into swimming pools before flowing into the sea.
Tenganan Pegringsingan - Balinese traditional village
Ubud - Bali's cultural and artistic centre

History of Bali
The Balinese people are descendants of a prehistoric race who migrated through mainland Asia to the
Indonesian archipelago, presumably first settling around 2500 BC. The end of the prehistoric period in
Indonesia was marked by the arrival of the Hindu people arriving from India around 100 BC as determined by Brahmi inscriptions on potsherds.
