  Bazaruto Archipelago
The Bazaruto Archipelago (Marine National Park) is among the most beautiful places in Africa. Situated about 10km (6.21 miles) off the southern coast of Mozambique, it is a tropical paradise of clear waters, sandy beaches, palm trees and coral reefs which makes it Mozambique's most popular tourist destination. The waters provide perfect opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving, and the big game fish provide excellent opportunities for fishermen. The entire area is protected as a world-class conservation area.

Archipelago consists of five islands
Bazaruto, Magaruque, Santa Carolina, Benguera (Benguerra) and Bangue. The islands are covered by large sand dunes and freshwater lakes, which are nesting grounds for black-winged flamingoes. The islands are home to small herds of red duiker antelope as well as freshwater crocodiles and samango monkeys. The reefs are home to turtles, dolphins and dugongs.

The largest island in the group is Bazaruto island, filled with fresh water lakes inhabited by crocodiles and many species of birds. The island itself is home to some 125 different species of birds.
To the south of Bazaruto lies Benguerra island. The smallest and most northerly of the islands, Saint Carolina, is comprised mainly of rock and coral

The region lay at the southernmost end of a traditional trading world that encompassed the Red Sea, the Hadhramaut coast of Arabia and the Indian coast, described in the 1st century coasting guide that is called the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea...
