National Parks / Nature Park
Grenspark Maas-Swalm-Nette - crossing border park
National Park De Groote Peel
De Groote Peel National Park lies on the border between the provinces of Noord Brabant and Limburg. This
peat bog, with an area of 1,400 hectares, is known mainly for it's wide variety of birds. Ninety five different
sorts nest here and more than two hundred and fifty sorts have been spotted here over the past hundred
years. It's also an important area for unusual dragonflies and butterflies. There is a new visitor's centre, Mijl
op Zeven, which has been built completely ecologically and is very impressive architecturally.
The area is most suitable for walks whereby one may find several 'corduroy roads' and a birdwatcher's hut and route.
National Park De Maasduinen - North Limburg, between the Maas River and German border
In the north of the province of Limburg, near Bergen and Gennep, De Maasduinen National Park spreads out to
the east of the Maas over a distance of more than 20 km. The park is 4,200 ha and encompasses woods, moors, fens and raised bog in which a large variety of amphibians and reptiles are to be found.
The high riverdunes are particularly characteristic. From the valley of the Maas to the plateau on German
territory a level difference of several tens of metres is bridged. The Geldersche Nierskanaal is also
phenomenal. By high water levels one can observe the power of a wild streaming river which has resulted in
a widely eroded bedding. There are also archaeological monuments. Visitors can walk or cycle and participate in guided tours. By the Westmeerven a birdwatcher's hut offers a good opportunity for
undisturbed birdwatching at close range.
Nationaal Park De Meinweg - border crossing park east of Roermond City
De Meinweg National Park lies to the east of Roermond near the German border, and encompasses woods,
heaths, fens and streams. The terraced landscape is very characteristic and is due to faultlines below the
surface. The four terraces bridge a level difference of some 50 metres. Approximately one million visitors a
year enjoy themselves here walking, cycling, horse-riding or in the visitor's centre. The area covers 1,600 ha
and is part of the German-Dutch border park Maas-Swalm-Nette. De Meinweg is the only nature area in the Netherlands where a population of wild boars roam freely
