Six years before the arrival of the Ship Hector to New Scotland in 1773 and 100 years before the Birth of
Canada, the first Afro-Nova Scotians came to Pictou County. The American War of Independence resulted in
the largest single influx of Blacks to the province and most of these Black Loyalists were free and formed the
foundation of the modern day presence in Nova Scotia. During the industrial age of the 19th Century, Black citizens from Tracadie came to Pictou County and most settled in New Glasgow.
North Queens
North Queens consists of several small communities stretching from Pleasant River to Kempt. North Queens is
a paradise for the naturalist or for those looking for natural beauty. In North Queens, you can visit one of the most interesting tourist destinations in Canada, Kejimkujik National Park.

Aspotogan Peninsula Hubbards is the eastern "gateway" to the Aspotogan Peninsula. The western "gateway" is East River. This
highway follows the shoreline of the peninsula for about 40 kilometres from Hubbards to East River. It is a
beautiful drive with lots to see and do en route. Scenic spots along the way are Fox Point, Mill Cove, Birchy
Head, The Lodge, North West Cove, South West Cove, Aspotogan, Bayswater, Blandford, Deep Cove and East River.

Hector Heritage Quay [ Pictou ] - see Town of Picttou Offers unique insight into the journey of early Scots settlers to Nova Scotia, and their arrival in Pictou. The
centerpiece is the continuing construction of a full-scale three-masted sailing ship, a replica of the Hector that
carried the early pioneers from Loch Broom, Scotland in 1773. You can experience the rolling motion of the
deck as the passengers disembark the Hector to begin their new lives. The Hector Heritage Quay provides a glimpse into 18th century life. Also on site is a carpentry shop and a restored blacksmith shop.
