Dover - town and major ferry port
The town of Dover faces France across the narrowest part of the English Channel and is home of the Dover
Calais ferry through the Port of Dover. The surrounding chalk cliffs have become known as the White cliffs of Dover, and the narrow sea passage nearby – the Strait of Dover. See Dover Town Council

Gravesend - town in northwest Kent, on the south bank of the Thames
Because of its geographical position it has always had an important role to play in the history and communications of this part of England.
Herne Bay - seaside town [ Canterbury City Council ]
Situated on the south coast of the Thames Estuary, 7 miles (11 km) north of Canterbury. Herne Bay developed

Hythe - small coastal market town [ District of Shepway ]
Situated on the edge of Romney Marsh, on the south coast of Kent. Hythe has had a frontline place in Britain's

Margate - seaside town within the Thanet district of East Kent
For at least 250 years, the town of Margate has been a leading seaside resort in the UK, drawing Londoners
to its beaches, Margate Sands. It's history is closely tied to the sea. Margate was a 'limb' of Dover in the
ancient confederation of the Cinque Ports. Margate also consists of Cliftonville, Garlinge, Palm Bay and Westbrook. See Visit Thanet.
New Romney - small town on the edge of Romney Marsh
The Romney Marsh is an area of flat, rich agricultural land reclaimed from the sea. The town was once a sea
port, with the harbour adjacent to the church, but is now over a mile from the sea. It is the headquarters of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway.
Ramsgate - seaside town on the Isle of Thanet in east Kent
Ramsgate's main attraction is its coastline. The town has one of the largest marinas on the English south

Sandwich - Once a major port in England [ now two miles from the sea ]
Sandwich is arguably one of the best preserved medieval towns in the UK. Within the old town walls the
many period houses, with their characteristic "Kent peg" roofs, are laid out in a street plan which has changed little since the creation of the Domesday book in 1086. See Discover Sandwich.
Sandwich Bay - a long sweeping inlet of the sea between Ramsgate and Deal

Sheerness Sheerness is located beside the mouth of the River Medway on the northwest corner of the Isle of Sheppey.
To the north, sandy beaches run along the coast of the Thames Estuary. Sheerness' sand and shingle beach
was awarded a European Blue Flag for cleanliness and safety. Flower gardens decorate the seafront, and a sea wall forms a promenade along the coast. See Tourism, Swale Borough Council.

Chiddingstone Castle was the home of Denys Eyre Bower between 1956 and 1977. Denys was a passionate
