National parks / Regional parks

  Lagan Valley Regional Park
The Lagan Valley Regional Park was established in 1967 with the aim of protecting the local countryside and its wildlife, and developing an area for informal recreation. It covers 1600ha and extends for 17.6 km
along both sides of the Lagan River between Belfast (Stranmillis) and Lisburn (Union Locks).
The Regional Park is a mosaic of countryside, urban parks, heritage sites, nature reserves and riverside trails. It contains many clues to its past: Stone Age monuments (e.g. the Giants Ring), Norman mottes, relics of the linen industry and, of course, the Lagan Canal, built during the 1700's
Despite its proximity to urban areas the Lagan Valley Regional Park retains its rural character and is an ideal place to enjoy the countryside, pursue active sports such as golf and canoeing, or to participate in more leisurely pursuits such as bird watching and walking.

Portrait of the Northern Ireland Coast
Simon Watterson (Author)
From beautiful golden strands to imposing sea cliffs and from quiet coves to busy ports, the diversity of the Northern Irish coastline is matched only by the variety of people who enjoy it and live on it.
Although Northern Ireland is a small country its coastline is surprisingly long, stretching from Carlingford Lough in the southeast to Lough Foyle in the northwest. Travelling its length, you discover the history of our forbearers and their hunter-gatherer and agricultural lifestyles; the richness of the Irish Sea and the fishing industry that was so important to the development of the coastal communities; and the industrial development in the Port of Belfast that enabled wider growth throughout the country. Providing a respite from economic toil, the coast is a playground for people from all walks of life: for families enjoying a rest or some surfing on the beaches of the northwest, climbers enjoying the challenges of Fairhead or nature lovers looking for hidden treasures on the shores of Strangford Lough.

History of Northern Ireland

The History of Ireland and Northern Ireland is complex and hotly disputed, many sites have been set up to try to explain our history but as the saying goes if you understand Irish history you don't really understand.

Early 20th century, Late 20th century, After the Good Friday (Belfast) Agreement.

  Ulster Museum
The Ulster Museum is a great introduction to the history of the city. It includes gold jewelry from a ship of the Spanish Armada, wrecked off the Giant's Causeway. The museum is set in the grounds of the Botanic Gardens, whose palm House has recently been restored.

Music, Art & Culture, Events & Entertainment

For countless centuries this little country, just the size of Connecticut, has been a powerhouse of cultural and artistic endeavour of remarkable continuity, longevity and, above all, diversity.
This is, after all, the Land of Finn McCool as well as St Patrick; a place where warriors were also bards; a country shared by both the Gael and the Planter; a land of imaginative writers as well as inventive geniuses. It's the birthplace of the Titanic, the Tyre and the Tractor as well as being the inspiration of Sir John Lavery, Seamus Heaney and Van Morrison.

For good-value restaurants and pubs in Ulster, head for the southern part of the city. And there's plenty of further entertainment on offer - catch a show at the Grand Opera House or one of Belfast's many theatres. Or maybe a musical pub or a comedy club is more your thing.

Traditional Music in the Glens of Antrim
Traditional culture survived well in the Glens of Antrim because of their remoteness and the Irish language was in daily use around Cushendall until early this century. Feis na nGleann was founded in Glenariff in 1904 under the inspiration of the celebrated Belfast folklorist and historian F J Bigger There were competitions in language, traditional music and dancing as well as athletics and hurling. The Feis was maintained by the Gaelic League (Connradh na Gaeilge) which fostered the 20th century revival of national culture throughout Ireland. This enthusiasm for traditional culture has survived into modern times, and there are many notable singers and musicians associated with this area.
