ANTALYA   >   TURKEY


Antalya is a city on the Mediterranean coast of southwestern Turkey, situated on a cliff and surrounded by mountains.

The Antalya region is Turkeys largest tourism center.

The Antalya coastal districts are Antalya, Gazipaşa, Alanya, Manavgat, Serik, Kemer, Kumluca, Finike, Kale and Kaş.

The Antalya inland districts are high in the Taurus Mountains [ ca. 900–1000 m ]: Gündoğmuş, Akseki, İbradı, Korkuteli and Elmalı [west of the province is also known as Lycia].

In the vicinity of Antalya is Myra (now called Demre), where St. Nicholas was bishop.

The Crusaders used the port of Antalya to sail to Palestine.

Antalya's old town is largely above a cliff. The major seaport in the south of the city adjacent to the beach Konyaaltı.

East of Antalya, the Duden waterfall runs over steep cliffs into the sea and in the west are wonderful sandy beaches surrounded by pine forests and mountains.

Offers top quality golf courses in a very special landscape of pine and eucalyptus trees. Belek has 9 golf courses. Due to the mild winter, it is possible to play golf 12 months a year.
  Perge   -   situated 15 km. east of Antalya
Greek ruins from the time after the Trojan War. In his time the Apostle Paul traveled from here on foot towards Cestrus mountain.

Cuisine

The special cuisine of Antalya offers Piyaz (made with tahini, garlic, walnuts and boiled beans), spicy hibeş with mixed cumin and tahini, SiS kofte, kebab Tandır, domates civesi, şakşuka and various cold Mediterranean dishes with olive oil.

According to old narrations, Antalya was founded in 58 BC by King Attalos II of Pergamon.
