Santiago de Compostela - Capital City Galicia - Santiago Turismo Santiago de Compostela is mainly a monumental town, a stony miracle which has been shaped around the
Apostle St James's sepulchre along the centuries, and which has resulted in one of the most splendid and
harmonic architectural ensembles in the world. Considered to be one of the three spiritual capitals of
Christendom together with Rome and Jerusalem, from the Middle Ages it became the goal of religious
pilgrimages, a phenomenon that would give birth to the pilgrims' Road to Santiago, the real spine of the art and
the thought from which, as Goethe said, the idea of Europe would be born. Thanks to this road, Compostela
spread its creations all over Europe in the same way that all cultural trends found their reflection in the city.

Santiago de Compostella - Capital Province A Coruna - Santiago Turismo Endpoint famous European pilgrimage route.
At the beginning of the ninth century, the bishop of Iria, Teodomiro, discovered the tomb of the apostle St
James and Kings Alfonso II and Alfonso III erected churches and founded the monasteries of Antealtares and
Pinario. The cult of Santiago, however, had aroused the distrust of the Muslim vizier, Almanzor, who razed Compostela to the ground in 997 and took the bells off to Cordoba.

Betanzos The village of Betanzos, 23 kilometres from La Coruña, contains wonderful examples of medieval architecture
, with the many houses bearing coats of arms and its 'fishing quarter' making it a delightful place to visit. Once a flourishing port, it now lies some distance from the sea.
Ferrol
Lugo - Concello de Lugo
During the Roman occupation, Lugo was the only town in Galicia to be legally recognised as a provincial
capital. Its walls, with many semi-circular turrets along a circuit of over 2 kilometres, date back to that time. In spite of subsequent additions, it is the finest Roman-walled area in the country.

Mondoñedo
The peaceful streets and squares of Mondoñedo are dotted with old buildings, convents and churches. The
Fonte Vella dates from the sixteenth century, but the majority of buildings date from the eighteenth century:
the Santuario de los Remedios, the Town Hall, the Santa Catalina Royal Seminary with its subsequent additions, etc.
Ourense - Concello de Ourense
Ourense is a city with centuries of history. It was an important settlement during Roman times because of its
location and because it was the ideal place to cross the River Miño. The famous Puente Viejo (Old Bridge)
dates back to those times, and although it has been rebuilt many times since then it is still the focal point of the city.
Pontevedra - Concello de Pontevedra
The many prehistoric cave engravings in the countryside surrounding the town of Pontevedra are proof of its
ancient origins; a primitive settlement situated at the foot of the river of the same name.
Tui - Concello de Tui
The history of Tui dates back many, many centuries, as befits its privileged location on a hill on the banks of
the River Miño and on the border with Portugal. These circumstances had a great bearing on the planning of its ancient streets, which harmoniously wind their way down from the cathedral to the river.
Vigo - Concello de Vigo
The sea and Vigo are inseparable. In the sixteenth century the port of Berbés was an important shipping
centre throughout the world, hit by a series of raids led initially by Drake and which culminated in the battle of Rande and the sinking of the Indies galleons.
Costa de la Muerte / Costa da Morte - Finisterre / Finisterra - The Death Coast
Camino de Santiago
The pilgrimage to the Cathedral of Compostela can be started from any of the villages along the Santigo Route
since it is not necessary to go through every stage of it. But if you want to make the pilgrimage from beginning to end, you will have to start in Roncesvalles and cover 31 stages.
