History of Fuerteventura
The Canary Islands were first discovered by ancient Greek and Roman seafarers, yet it was not until the
early 1400s that anyone made a serious attempt to conquer the Canaries.
In 1405, the French conqueror Jean de Bethencourt took Fuerteventura and gave his name to the former
capital, Betancuria, on the west coast.
