Grand squares such as Marques de Pombal and Commercio are linked by sweeping avenues; more characteristic however are the steep, narrow streets of the Alfama, crowned by the Castle of St. George. Expo '98 has left an exciting legacy – it's certainly worth the trip to see the grand aquariums and the specially constructed bridge across the Tagus. Art lovers should try the intimate Gulbenkian Museum.

Portuguese - Teach Yourself One-day Series
This one-day course is specifically written for the holiday maker for whom a short holiday does not justify a complete language course. It comes on one 75-minute CD and teaches only basic, core words, as few as the holiday maker can get away with, and a few useful phrases, which will be supported by body language. It comes with an 8-page booklet which simply lists the words and phrases taught on the recording - no pronunciation guide, no grammar summary, just a written record of what has been learned.

Fado [ destiny in Portuguese ]
A form of melancholic music. It is linked to the Portuguese word 'saudade', conveying a complex feeling of sadness, pain, miss and love, along with other feelings. Its origins are probably a mixture of African slave rhythms with traditional music of Portuguese sailors. And it also has an Arabic influence.

Nowadays fado is a world wide known symbol of Portugal, being represented for many years in foreign countries by Amália, and more recently by Dulce Pontes, among others. Throughout the world, to the name of Portugal, there were two things immediately related: the bullfighting and the Fado. Although taking many forms as it is sung in Porto, in Coimbra or in Lisbon, the Fado is, by self-earned right, the expression of the Portuguese soul.
