National Park

 National Park Oosterschelde
Oosterschelde National Park lies in the heart of the Delta region. It is the largest national park in the Netherlands covering an area of 37,000 hectares.
There's lots to see and experience for the nature buffs during the many excursions. One can also walk, sail or cycle in the area. The Oosterschelde is constantly changing under the influence of the wind and especially the tide. At low tide the sandplates and salt
marshes appear. A great number of birds gather here in search of food while seals relax on the plates and nurse their young. At high tide the plates and salt marshes disappear again and the birds move on to the higher, more vegetated salt marshes, or to the polders and creaks behind the inner dikes. They wait on these elevated sanctuaries till the tide goes out again. Apart from fish, there are plants and animals living below the water level that are usually found on rocky coastlines. There are several museums and information centres along the banks of the Oosterschelde.

This latest addition to the successful Second World War Battleground Europe Series describes the fierce campaign, codenamed INFATUATE, mounted in November 1944 to clear the way through to the port of Antwerp. This was a vital task as the Allies lacked sufficient port facilities to provide for the increasing quantities of war supplies required as the advance eastwards took them closer to Germany. There was a danger of lines of communication becoming over-extended. A leading role was played by British Royal Marine commandos but all who took part in both D Day and this landing regarded the former as a picnic! As the book vividly describes, the Germans fought with extraordinary courage against overwhelming odds and refused to surrender although all must have known defeat was inevitable. The winter weather was another major problem and the terrain was extremely difficult.

To prevent tragedies like the North Sea Flood of 1953 [ a break in the dikes and seawalls in the Netherlands killing 1,835 people ] from happening again, an ambitious flood defense system was conceived and deployed, called the Delta Works.
The most sophisticated and famous part of the Delta works is the Oosterscheldekering [ = a dam ]

History of Zeeland

De zee was voor de Zeeuwen zowel een vijand als een bron van voedsel en inkomen. Veel Zeeuwen verdienen nog steeds hun brood met de visvangst en mossel- en oesterkweek.

 Vlissingen
In the centuries of its growth Vlissingen was especially well known as the centre of (herring) fishery, commerce, privateering and slave trade. The history of Vlissingen is characterized by oppression, bombardments and floods. All this as a consequence of Vlissingen's strategic position at the river Schelde.

He who ruled Vlissingen owned the most important passageway to the docks of Antwerp. For this reason the eyes of several foreign powers fell on Vlissingen. British, French, Germans and Spaniards, they were all within the cities boundaries long before the tourists were there.
The heyday of the Golden Age, in which ships from Vlissingen sailed all seas and attributed to the world power of 'De Zeven Provincien' [ The Seven Provinces ] was followed by a recession in the eighteenth century. Especially the effects of the Napoleonic wars were disastrous. After 1870 a period of revival occurred as a result of the building of new docks, the canal through Walcheren, the railway and the establishment of the shipyard called The Schelde. The Second World War interrupted this growth. Again bombardments, shelling and inundation heavily damaged the city.
