This former fishing island has survived, despite the fierce storms which made life almost impossible in the
past. The strongly religious inhabitants of this village led a very islolated existence prior to the draining of the
polders. Nowadays, it is a popular and frequently visited village with narrow, sloping alleyways and a
colourful harbour. The cultural historical museum, in the Old Council Hall has exhibits of the traditional
costumes worn in Urk and gives a narration of the island's history in many different languages, as well as explaining the main source of income, namely fishing.

Schokland, an Island in Time
Schokland is a special place: as a symbol of the struggle against the sea, it stands for the history and culture
of the Netherlands. For centuries, Schokland was a densely populated island in the Zuiderzee. But the sea
level kept rising and Schokland became smaller and smaller. By the early 19th century the situation had
become intolerable, but the Schoklanders refused to give in. In 1859, after repeated flood disasters, the last
villages were finally evacuated by royal degree. The island was abandoned to the elements and the
Schokland culture came to an end. In 1942 a large part of the former Zuiderzee was reclaimed, wich meant
that Schokalnd ceased being an island and could be reached from all sides via the former sea floor.
Snowvillage
Snow fun all year round. In the Riviera Snow Village's attractive snow hall situated in Biddinghuizen, you'll

History of Flevoland
After a flood in 1916, it was decided that the Zuiderzee, an inland sea within the Netherlands, would be
closed and reclaimed. In 1932, the Afsluitdijk was completed, which closed off the sea completely. The Zuiderzee was subsequently called IJsselmeer.
The first part of the new lake that was reclaimed was the Noordoostpolder (Northeast polder). This new land
included, among others, the former island of Urk and it was included with the province of Overijssel.
After this, other parts were also reclaimed: the eastern part in 1957 and the southern part in 1968 [ Zuiderzee
Works ]. The municipalities on the three parts voted to become a separate province, which happened in 1986.
Nieuw Land Polder Museum !!!! website opens the whole screen
The people of the Netherlands are known for their struggle against the sea. The way in which people fended
for themselves, in spite of floods and disasters, how they slowly wrested the land from the sea, that can be
seen, heard and experienced in the Nieuw Land Polder Museum. The unusual building is situated on the boundary between land and sea.

Batavia Wharf - National Historic Shipping Centre
The Batavia, a replica of a ship from the United East India Company [V.O.C.], is the pride of the wharf. The
ship sank in the 17th century, off the coast of Western Australia. A guided tour gives you an idea of life on
board of such ship. The wharf is also the location for work being carried out according to traditional ship
building methods, on another famous ship: the 17th century admiralty ship of Michiel de Ruyter, named the Zeven Provincien ( Seven Provinces).
In the Historic Shipping Centre, you will be given an idea of the enormous number of ships which sank during
the years past in the waters of the former Zuiderzee and were rediscovered after the land fell dry.
