National Parks
National Park The Biesbosch On the border between the provinces of Noord Brabant and Zuid Holland lies De Biesbosch National Park. It is
one of the largest and most valuable nature reserves in our country, with an area of 7,100 hectares. It is one
of the last remaining areas in Europe with freshwater tides. The area contains large rivers and creaks,
marshy woodland, serge grasslands, vegetated strands and grasslands. Flora and fauna is extremely varied
and, especially for birds, the Biesbosch has always played an important role internationally as a rest-, forage- and nesting ground.
The Biesbosch is also famous for the beavers, which were successfully re-introduced to the area ten years
ago. The population has grown since then to almost eighty specimens. Although the Biesbosch is almost
exclusively accessible by water, (there are only a few places with access by land) almost a half million
tourists visit each year. Many of these visitors enter the national park via one of the two visitor's centres or
with a touring boat from one of several boat companies. Apart from this it is mainly the watersportsmen who like to visit the park at their own opportunity.
National Park Loonse and Drunense Dunes - between Tilburg, Waalwijk and Den Bosch
This national park consists of the dunes of Loon and Drunen and De Brand. De Loonse en Drunense Duinen is
the largest area of shifting sands in western Europe. It is not only unique because of it's size but also because of the actively shifting sands which results in an ever-changing landscape.
To the south of the shifting sands lies De Brand. This nature reserve is one of the last remnants of the
marshy-woodland landscape of Brabant: wet marsh woods with reed vegetation and grasslands. Because
of this variety the national park plays an important role in the diversity of our country's flora and fauna.
More than one million tourists visit the area annually. Excursions are held often and there are walks, cycling and mountain-bike routes and horseriding.
National Park De Groote Peel
De Groote Peel National Park lies on the border between the provinces of Noord Brabant and Limburg. This
peat bog, with an area of 1,400 hectares, is known mainly for it's wide variety of birds. Ninety five different
sorts nest here and more than two hundred and fifty sorts have been spotted here over the past hundred
years. It's also an important area for unusual dragonflies and butterflies. There is a new visitor's centre, Mijl
op Zeven, which has been built completely ecologically and is very impressive architecturally.
The area is most suitable for walks whereby one may find several 'corduroy roads' and a birdwatcher's hut and route.
Border Park De Zoom Kalmhoutse Heide
The border-park De Zoom-Kalmthoutse Heide unlimited nature area with numerous fens, heathlands, inland
dunes and vast woodlands. It is an area with rare environmental values and of some natural and cultural historic importance.
The Dutch border cuts through the area in several places and the land-ownership is very diverse: nature
-reserves under management of Dutch and Flemish governments, large privately-owned estates, small-scale
farmlands and scattered small woodlands of varied ownership. De Grenspark is approximately 4,000 hectares in total.
A management plan has been formed in which desired goals are described until 2015. The park has been named in the context of the Benelux agreement with regard to conservation and preservation of it's
landscape.

History of Dutch Brabant
Until the 17th century, the area that now makes up the province of North Brabant was mostly part of the
duchy of Brabant, of which the southern part is in present-day Belgium, although through time several areas
have been autonomous entities. In the 14th and 15th century, the area went through a golden age, especially in the cities of Antwerp, Leuven (both in Belgium now), Breda and 's-Hertogenbosch.
