Holidays in Abruzzo  -  Travel information Abruzzo.

Provinces in Abruzzo : Chieti, Pescara, Teramo and Laguila.

Abruzzo, where the north of Italy meets the south, is one of the most sparsely populated regions on the Italian peninsula.

Bordered by the Apennines to the west and fringed by the Adriatic on the east, it has some of Italy's most unspoiled scenery. In the Gran Sasso it has the highest mountain of the Apennine range. Many parts of the mountains are protected nature reserves.

In the northwest the region borders Marche, in the west Umbria, in the south Latium, in the southeast Molise, and in the east the Adriatic Sea [ Adriatic Riviera ].

The town of L'Aquila, as well as being a gateway to the ski resorts and sitting at the entrance to the Gran Sasso national park, has a fascinating history. At the foot of Gran Sasso itself, the town was founded by German Emperor Frederick II in 1242. He pulled the people of 99 local villages together to form a new city. Each village had its own part of town, each with its own piazza and church. Only two of the churches remained.

History of Abruzzo

The first inhabitants known of in what is now Abruzzo were the Picenians.

Until 1963, Abruzzo and neighbouring Molise to the south formed one region called 'Abruzzi'.

 History of Italy  -  WikipediA
Italy's history is perhaps the most important one for the cultural and social development of the Mediterranean area as a whole. The country has been host to important human activities in prehistoric times, and therefore archaeological sites of note can be found in many regions: Latium and Tuscany, Umbria and Basilicata. After Magna Graecia, the Etruscan civilisation and especially the Roman Empire that came to dominate this part of the world for many centuries, came the medieval Humanism and the Renaissance that further helped to shape European philosophy and art.
