History

The first Reich – known for much of its existence as the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation – stemmed from a division of the Carolingian Empire in 843, which was founded by Charlemagne on December 25th, 800, and existed in varying forms until 1806. During these almost thousand years, the Germans expanded their influence successfully with help of the organization of the Catholic Church, Northern Crusades and the Hanseatic League. When in Germany, Do as the Germans Do: The Clued-in Guide to German Life, Language and Culture (When In....do as the Locals Do)
By Hyde Flippo
On entering a restaurant, should you find your own way to a table or should you wait to be seated? What is a suitable topic for small-talk with a stranger in Germany? This guide combines an appreciation of Germany's rich heritage with a practical awareness of contemporary customs. Over 100 articles cover a broad range of topics, including: customs, food and drink, language, travel, arts and pop culture, politics, business, media and entertainment, home life, consumer behaviour, religion, history, and education. Multiple-choice questions provide an avenue to the articles for browsing, and there is an index for quick reference. Internet references (to both English and German sites) accompany almost every article, enabling readers to use their knowledge or further their research, whether checking government statistics on housing, taking a virtual tour of a museum, or planning a cross-country tour by train.
Paperback 176 pages (July 1, 2002); Publisher: Contemporary Books
