  Roque Saint-Christophe   -   troglodyte fort & town
In one of the most beautiful landscapes of the Périgord, halfway between les Eyzies and Montignac, the enormous cliff of the "Roque Saint-Christophe" rises to a peak above the Vézère River. This limestone wall, one kilometer long and eighty meters high, has been endlessly eroded by the river and frost until it became carved of rock shelters and long and aerial terraces impressionally overhead.
These natural cavities were occupied by cave dwellers approximately 55 000 years ago. Later, during the Middle Ages and up until the Renaissance Period, they gradually changed to become a fortress and protected town.
Few troglodytic sites in the world can compete in terms of age and extended area. The "Roque Saint-Christophe" remains one of the most original sites one can visit in the Périgord.
