Burgundy (Drive Around)
Andrew Sanger (Author) This guide expertly divides Burgundy and the Rhone Valley into touring areas - one per chapter. From the
Romanesque churches of Vezelay and Auxerre to the venerable vineyards of the Cote d'Or, and from the
gastronomic delights of Lyon to the charming backwaters of the Brionnais. In every chapter, you will find up
-to-date attraction, lodging, shopping and eating recommendations for individual towns, or for the area as a
whole. This title takes you a drive through the monumental architecture and unspoiled wilderness of the Cure
and Cousin valleys. It shows you the sights of Lyon, France's second city and a World Heritage Site and a
journey among the Cotes Du Rhone, visiting vineyards and admiring the stunning views before reaching the Alps.

Arnay-le-Duc
Located in the heart of Burgundy, halfway between Paris and Lyon on the R.N. 6 (highway Nr 6) near the A6
freeway (Pouilly-en-Auxois exit), ARNAY-LE-DUC is a charming little city with a rich historical and cultural
heritage. The city has the "station verte" designation which means "green resort", and is known for its authentic rural and natural areas.
Nestled in the Côte d'Or countryside, between Auxois and Morvan, ARNAY-LE-DUC was once the property

Besançon
Nestling in a loop formed by the river Doubs, Besançon lies at the foot of a hill on which Vauban built his
masterpiece of military architecture, the Citadelle, in an exceptional defensive site (the modern town centre).
The limitations imposed by geography have dictated the development of the town down the centuries: by
turns military stronghold, garrison town, political centre and religious capital. The two great periods of the
town's history – the 16C when it was a free town of the Germanic Empire enjoying the protection of Charles
V and the 18C when it became part of France – have left their mark on the urban landscape in the shape of late Gothic, Renaissance and classical buildings.
The bluish ochre limestone from nearby Chailluz lends a certain uniformity to the tall houses with their sloping roofs.

Noyers sur Serein - a village where time has been standing still
There are half-timbered houses, ashlars, pillars and pinnacles. There are a lot of lanes and small squares
made of chalky and granitic pavements. There are towers surrounded by the river Serein loops. This is why
"Noyers la Médiévale" is called "one of the most beautiful villages of France".
During the day or night, while walking along the main street, no one would be surprised to see riders,
peasants, burghers or scholars passing by. No one would be surprised to cross the funny face of a
Burgundian of yesteryear. It would be easy to hear a minstrel's song coming out of one of the eighteen towers standing along the ramparts
