The Grand Traverse of the Massif Central
By Mountain Bike, Road Bike or on Foot
Alan Castle (Author)
The GTMC is a long-distance mountain biking trail that crosses the entire Massif Central in France, from Clermont-Ferrand in the north to Montpellier and the Mediterranean Coast at Sete. All of the major regions of the Massif Central are visited, including the Auvergne, the Cezallier plateau and the remote Margeride, the high forested hills of the Cevennes National Park and the limestone hills bordering the coastal plain. Much of the route is off-road and uses many Grandes Randonnees, so it also makes an excellent walking route. Just over 700km in length it offers a challenge to the mountain biker or walker, as well as the pleasure of exploring one of southern France's most beautiful and historic regions. This title describes route in 17 stages. Alternative on-road route is described for road cyclists. It offers additional information for walkers. It presents background information on places of interest, contact details and other useful information.

  Neris-les-Bains   -   Ville de Néris-les-Bains
The Néris-les-Bains resort is located at the border of four historic regions: the Bourbonnais, the Auvergne, the Berry and the Limousin. At an elevation of around 1000 feet, on the foothills of the Massif Central range, it enjoys a mild climate and an unspoilt environment.
Walking the streets of Néris, be ready to be amazed by the old railway station, the theater - in the Napoleon III's style, the church, the Saint-Joseph chapel or the impressive viaducts of the former railway track.
If you enjoy outdoor activities , you will find Néris a haven, with its wide range of activities: hiking, horse -riding, mountain-biking, fishing, swimming (indoor pool), tennis, golf, bungee jumping and more.
Finally, how could we possibly talk about Néris without mentioning the waters? These waters originate from the deepest layers of the Earth (approximately three miles deep!) and are of the hyper-thermal type. The springs gush out at 53° Celsius (almost 140° Farenheit) at the point of emergence. During their trip through the various rock strata, these hot waters become enriched with minerals and trace elements. This is why, thanks to this unique formula, the waters of Néris-les-Bains are suitable for Psychosomatic, Neurological and Rheumatoid therapies.
