Tibet (Bradt Travel Guide)
Michael Buckley Exploring ethnic Tibet independently is a challenge. The proverbial 'land of
snows', it possesses some of the wildest and roughest road routes in high Asia, and so trekking, motoring
and mountain-biking are all covered in this new edition. Political and cultural issues make Tibet a sensitive
destination for Westerners to visit, so Michael Buckley's advice includes guidelines on cultural etiquette, local customs and travelling with minimum impact on Tibet's culture and environment.

History of Tibet / Tibetan history
Little is known of Tibet before the 7th century when Buddhism was introduced by missionaries from India. Tibet was a strong kingdom between the 8th and 10th centuries.
In Western usage, "Tibet" may refer either to the Tibet Autonomous Region or TAR (an administrative
subdivision of the People's Republic of China), or to a larger region that the Government of Tibet in Exile has
termed historic Tibet, which consists of the traditional provinces of Amdo, Kham, and U-Tsang.
The TAR covers the former U-Tsang province and western Kham, the remainder coming under the present
-day Chinese provinces of Qinghai, Gansu, Yunnan, and Sichuan; the government of the PRC also claims for
the TAR most of the territory of Indian-administered Arunachal Pradesh, a claim which is not acknowledged by the Government of Tibet in Exile.
