CHRISTMAS MARKETS HOLLAND   >   CM

Christmas markets in the Netherlands : Bronkhorst, Deventer, Het Loo in Apeldoorn

Father Christmas Letters
Picture the scene: it's the week before Christmas, and the morning post arrives with a special Santa letter for your child. Imagine their face as they open their very own personalised letter from Father Christmas.

Bronkhorst   -   A Christmas Carol   -   at a castle in the Province of Gelderland

  Deventer   -   Charles Dickens Festival
Deventer is a former Hanseatic town on the river IJssel and one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands. Deventer was a prominent member of the Hanseatic league. In the Middle Ages merchants from every corner of Europe flocked to this town to attend the annual fairs. It is in this period that the present town centre finds its origin. Several historic monuments, such as, for instance, the beautiful building 'De Drie Haringen' (The Three Herrings), recall the old Hanseatic days of yore. Over the last thirty years the city of Deventer has devoted a lot of attention to the renovation and conservation of the historic town centre. The old street pattern is virtually unchanged and hundreds of monumental buildings have been restored, often furnished with newly decorated windows or new facades.
As toiched by magic the town changes during the Charles Dickens Festival into a Christmas dream come true.

Het Loo   -   Christmas at the Palace Het Loo

An impression of three centuries of celebrating Christmas in the House of Orange. Paleis Het Loo National Museum will be treating visitors to a glimpse of what Christmas used to be like with the Royal family in the past three hundred years. Beautifully laid tables and yuletide greenery will transform the palace into a Christmas setting fit for royalty. In a number of rooms the Christmas tables of various members of the Dutch Royal family of the house of Orange Nassau have been reconstructed. Christmas trees inside and outside are decorated with a great variety of ornament.  The exhibitions of Christmas tables of the Dutch royal family and the family of Dutch stadholders have meanwhile become a tradition at Paleis Het Loo thanks to the enormous interest shown by the public.
Het Loo Palace, in the woodland setting of Apeldoorn in the heart of the Netherlands, was the favourite summer residence of the Stadtholders and the Royal Family of the Netherlands from 1686 to 1975. Since 1984 the palace has served as a museum after a spectacular restoration of the buildings and the gardens, returning them to their original seventeenth century state.
