Grafton County is heavily rural. About half of its total area is in the White Mountain National Forest. Squam Lake, featured in the film On Golden Pond, and the Old Man of the Mountain landmark are located here, as are Dartmouth College and the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest [ see Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study]. Many of the 4,000-foot mountains of New Hampshire are within the county. The Appalachian Trail passes through parts of at least ten towns in the county.

Rockingham County was home to New Hampshire's first European settlements, Pannaway and Strawberry Banke (Portsmouth). In 1623, only three years after the landing of the pilgrims in Plymouth, Massachusetts, David Thomson first settled New Hampshire at Odiorne Point in what is now known as the Town of Rye. By the mid 1600s, the county included three of the four original New Hampshire towns and was the center for business, trade and government for the entire state. The state capital was located in Portsmouth first, then later moved to Exeter and other towns. In 1808 the capital finally settled to it's current location in Concord.

According to historian Jeremy Belknap, the area was called "Wecohamet" by native Abenaki Indians. The first known European to explore the region was Martin Pring from Bristol, England in 1603. Settled in 1623 as "Hilton's Point" by brothers William and Edward Hilton, Dover is the oldest permanent settlement in New Hampshire, and the seventh oldest in the United States.

As with much of New England, the weather in this city varies greatly throughout the year. Harsh winters often batter the area while the summers can be scorching; it is a four-season area.

The camps are located on the shores of Squam Lake, and have the land and facilities available to present such a program. Currently, the first 115 applications are accepted, however many more apply than can be accommodated.

The Lebanon Opera House, an historic 800 seat facility with superb acoustics, is the largest proscenium theater in the Upper Connecticut River Valley. Since its dedication in 1924, the Opera House has served as a venue for vaudeville, traveling theatricals, and community events.

Constructed in 1892, the Bow Street Theatre building originally was designed for beer and grain storage. It was built with walls up to two feet thick for insulation from winter cold and summer heat. In 1979, a glass enclosure for the lobby area was added when the facility was renovated as a theatre.
