Canada's Modern-Day First Nations: Nunavut and Evolving Relationships
How Canada Became Canada. Ellyn Sanna (Author) and William Hunter (Author) Long before the first European settlers crossed the Atlantic, Canada's
original inhabitants had a culture based on respect for the earth and all forms of life. These vibrant and practical values enriched Canada's
formation. In fact, the early settlers from Europe might not even have survived if not for the help and support of Canada's First Nations, who
taught the newcomers how to live in a harsh natural environment. First Nations people shared their values and knowledge, played active roles in
Canada's journey toward Confederation, and helped create the modern nation Canada has become today. In the twenty-first century, First Nations
are more and more taking their rightful place in Canada's culture and government. Their wisdom and insights are helping to guide Canada in its role in the international community. In
this book, you will learn about the contributions of these First Nations communities. In particular, you will make
an imaginary trip to Nunavut, Canada's new First Nations territory, and gain a greater understanding of Canada's rich and lasting Native heritage.

History of Nunavut
The vast territory of northern Quebec now known as Nunavik [a place to live] covers more than 560,000
square kilometers. For almost 4,000 years, it has been occupied by Palaeo-eskimos, the people which inhabits the whole northern circumpolar region.
In the late 19th Century, the arrival of the Qallunaat (the Inuit name for non-Inuit from the south) radically
altered the traditional lifestyle of the Inuit, which until then had been nomadic. Whalers, missionaries, and especially fur traders had a profound impact on Inuit life.

Music, Art & Culture, Events & Entertainment
Avataq Cultural Institute The Avataq Cultural Institute was created in 1980 with a mandate to protect and promote Inuit language and culture in Nunavik.
Since its inception, the Institute has recognized the valuable role of Elders in Inuit society. As a result, it
pushed for the creation of the Inuit Elders Conference, the first of which was held in Kangirsuk in 1981.
In Inuit culture, the Elders are the trustees of wisdom and knowledge that has been passed down over
thousands of years. Since the arrival of the Qallunaat (non-Inuit) in the second half of the 19th century, Elders
have seen their role in the community and family gravely diminished. However, they are still the only ones able to transmit the wealth of traditional Inuit culture to future generations.
