To the northeast are the imposing Yorkshire Moors, the rich agricultural Vale of York, the chalky hills of the Wolds and the dramatic storm-tossed coastline. To the south are the industrial and commercial cities and towns, which have made such a major contribution to our industrial and cultural heritage

For days out, Fountains Abbey, the National Trust's top attraction, is a must. Newby Hall is famous for its beautiful gardens, while Ripley Castle near by has been home to the Ingilby family since the 1320s. Brimham Rocks and Stump Cross Caverns offer breathtaking examples of natural formations, and families will love Lightwater Valley Theme Park.
 Herriot Country

The grandeur of Normanby Hall, with its award winning Victorian Walled garden, contrasts with the magnificent St John's Church, the setting for the recently opened 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, offering a programme of changing exhibitions and events.
 Peak District
It is the variety of landscape that makes the Peak District so special. For the visitor there are many kinds of countryside to explore - from remote wind blown tops to tranquil dales, from hard rock edges to traditional flower rich hay meadows, from great show caves to gentle river valleys.

With one of the best medieval churches in Yorkshire, one of only three surviving medieval bridge chapels in England, a traditional market beneath a space-age 'flying roof' and, housed in Clifton Park Museum, Britain's finest collection of Rockingham porcelain.
Outside the town, the romantic ruins of Roche Abbey, waterways, villages like Wentworth and Thorpe Salvin, a mysterious collection of follies, ancient woodland, even the chance to encounter exotic wildlife at the Tropical Butterfly House - these are some of the quiet delights of countryside that makes up over two-thirds of the Borough
Selby District  -  Selby, Tadcaster & Sherburn
The Selby area, famed for its agriculture, makes up most of the flat and highly fertile Vale of York, and is ideal for those who wish to tour the countryside on foot or cycle. If you like less exerting and faster modes of transport, you may also be attracted to the many quiet, pretty villages that are scattered throughout the District.
 Sheffield
Sheffield is England's fourth largest city and its greenest, with over 50 parks, more woodland than any other city and over one third of its area lying within the Peak District National Park. It is home to the largest theatrical complex outside London comprising the Lyceum, Studio and Crucible theatres.
 Wakefield
Heritage, history, shopping and sport are all on offer within the Wakefield District. The centre of the city itself is dominated by the spire of All Saints Cathedral, which at 247 feet is the tallest spire in Yorkshire. Whilst on the edge of the City you will find the Chanty Chapel of St Mary, one of only four Medieval bridge chapels remaining in the country.
 Yorkshire Coast  -  Coastal resorts
Nothing beats the timeless appeal of the seaside. Golden beaches, majestic cliffs and Great British resorts. Scarborough, Bridlington and Cleethorpes bustle with life; Whitby is a historic port and Filey and Hornsea are traditional favourites and proud to stay that way.
Yorkshire glories in one of the finest stretches of coastline in Britain: golden beaches, rocky coves and towering cliffs. Bridlington and award winning Scarborough are major resorts with new 'seaside style' and further north, Whitby is a picturesque fishing port and inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula. Filey and Hornsea are traditional favourites and proud to stay that way, while Staithes and Robin Hood's Bay are quieter havens.
 Yorkshire Dales
The Yorkshire Dales offers a priceless gift and a landscape to be carefully enjoyed for generations to come. The beauty of the Dales is well known. It is an area of many moods. It can be described as wild, expansive, tranquil, charming and, at times, even awesome. However you wish to describe it, the Dales unquestionably include some of the finest upland scenery in the country, making it the perfect place to enjoy, whatever the season.

 Brontė Country  -  Bradford
The name, Brontė Country, comes from the three Brontė sisters whose novels and poems immortalised the austere moorlands, which surrounded their home, the Parsonage in Haworth that today is presented as a museum.
Brontė Country is an area of outstanding natural beauty with a diversity of landscape ranging from the serene to the wild and dramatic. It offers the moody solitude of the moorlands hills and Pennines with the rural softness of the Yorkshire Dales, and provides the perfect base from which to experience its many attractions along with those adjoining the area.
 Settle & the 3 Peaks
One of the most unspoilt market towns of the Yorkshire Dales, Settle is the ideal location for exploring the southern Dales or the Forest of Bowland - both areas of outstanding beauty.

History of Yorkshire

Yorkshire has a fascinating and intriguing history, with stories of romance, violence, heroism and adversity spanning over 2000 years. Monuments of centuries shaped by the hands of Roman and Viking invaders and medieval monks have been preserved to recount such tales.
Yorkshire has been witness to a great deal of national history, including Roman invasions, Viking settlements, Saxon successes, Monarchy changing battles, the foundation of Methodism, great aristocracy and the industrial revolution.
Yorkshire has also been important to British Monarchs from the earliest times. Legend has it that King Arthur is buried in a crypt underneath Richmond Castle, Richard III grew up at Middleham Castle and Yorkshire has played a very strategic role in the history of England and for a succession of medieval Kings. Stamford Bridge in Yorkshire ended the long Viking threat to England and the region was pivotal during the War of the Roses and the Civil War, which tore the country apart.

The Golden Age of the Yorkshire Coast - Malcolm Barker
The Yorkshire coast and its resorts enjoyed a Golden Age that began after the First World War. Through the 1920s and '30s crowds seemed to grow every year with the introduction of holidays with pay, cheaper travel and more white-collar work. A week, or even a fortnight, at the coast seemed everybody's idea of the perfect holiday. These happy times returned after the 1939-45 war, but then travelling abroad in search of the sun came into fashion and a decline in the coastal holiday trade was inevitable. This pictorial book is designed to rekindle memories of the Golden Age. Using remarkable photographs from the archives of the Yorkshire Post and other local sources, it focuses on a number of broad themes such as "Getting There", "Where to stay", "On the sands" and "What to do". It is certain to bring happy thoughts brimming back to those lucky enough to have known the Yorkshire coast in its heyday.

The Canals of the Aire and Calder Navigation (Transport Through the Ages S.)
By Mike Tavlor
'The Canals of the Aire and Calder Navigation' is the first canal book in the new series 'Transport Through The Ages', brought to you by Wharncliffe Books. This fascinating book traces the nostalgic journey of the canal boats through the ages. As a new pictorial history, 'The Canals of the Aire and Calder Navigation' demonstrates how the Calder became one of the UK's most successful inland waterways. The collection of illustrations, maps and photographs are all dated from 1900 to the present day. The waterways made an enormous contribution to the prosperity of towns such as Leeds, Wakefield, Castleford, Knottingley and Goole by delivering raw materials and taking away finished products from manufacturers situated along its banks, as well as feeding coal from waterside collieries to the Ferrybridge power station of the twentieth century. Take yourself on a nostalgic journey through the transitional times of these very busy and successful waterways, as you read 'The Canals of the Aire and Calder Navigation'.
