Durham County
Northumberland - Visitors Guide
Alnwick District Council
Alnwick District lies in the heart of Northumberland, just 30 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne in the north-east of England. It is one of the most rural and sparsely populated districts in the UK.
Alnwick District is stunningly beautiful and stretches from the unspoilt wilds of the Northumberland National
Park in the west to the outstanding beauty of the Heritage coast on the east. It encompasses, picturesque villages, historic market towns, ancient castles and spectacular scenery.
Alnwick Town - see Alnwick District Council
Historic county town of Northumberland and seat of the Duke of Northumberland, Alnwick is one of the most
picturesque market towns in Northumberland and the best place in Britain to live (Country Life 2002). This
medieval market town enjoyed economic prosperity with the development of the stagecoach, and became an
important staging post, only a days ride from Berwick upon Tweed in the north and Newcastle upon Tyne in
the south. In 1860 the number of inns in the town exceeded 50! a few of these still remain and today the
cobbled streets and narrow alleys which once rang out with the clatter of hooves can be explored in peace.
The fine stone buildings, which dominate the town, now house specialist shops which can be explored at your leisure.
Berwick-upon-Tweed
No-one can visit the Borough of Berwick-upon-Tweed without developing a taste for its magnificent Heritage Coastline and delightful fishing villages.
The coastline is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty, and as you travel its 25-mile length, it's
easy to see why. There's tremendous variety too, with spectacular beaches interspersed with craggy cliffs
and quiet, sheltered bays. Time the tides right and you can drive across the famous causeway to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, one of the strongholds of early Christianity in England.
Don't miss - as if you could - the dramatic and imposing castle at Bamburgh. Stunning is the only word for it.
Darlington Borough Council - Tees Valley
Darlington and its surrounding areas provide a wide spectrum of activities, leisure and sporting events and places of cultural interest for all ages
Durham City - Durham City Tourist Board
Durham is a compact city yet offers a wide range of facilities. A wide range of shops and restaurants co
-exist happily with the Victorian Market. Much of Durham's shopping area is closed to traffic, making for a
more relaxed atmosphere. Take time to sit in the cobbled Market Place and enjoy some of the street
entertainment, particularly during July and August. The monthly Farmers' Market is a welcome new addition to
the events calendar. Here you will find fresh local specialities to take back home. In the Spring and Summer, stunning floral displays adorn the City for which Durham regularly wins prizes. Attractions | Where to Eat | Entertainment | Accommodation | Tourist Information | Facilities | Travel & Maps

Gateshead Council
Largest in area of the five Tyne and Wear districts. It comprises the mainly urban areas of Central Gateshead,
Felling, Dunston and Blaydon and the more rural districts of Ryton, Whickham and parts of the Derwent Valley. Middlesbrough
The Town Hall is Victorian high gothic; the library is first-rate arts and crafts; the quite eccentric Transporter Bridge is utterly unique.
Newcastle
Newcastle - a great city - once in the forefront of 19th century industrial innovation, now, the forefront of technical innovation, leisure and culture.
Wander down to the transformed waterfront, the Quayside, now lined with stylish hotels, designer bars,
restaurants and public art. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge, a work of art in itself, arches across the Tyne to link the City to Gateshead Quays and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
Sunderland - Government -
It has one of very few national museums outside London - the National Glass Centre. It's just reinvented the
Winter Garden idea, building a 21st century palm-house in a city-centre park; it has one of Britain's earliest
Christian churches; and its University is a fashionable new hotspot for young film-makers. Durham was
described by Bill Bryson as 'a perfect little city'. Its history shows in every cobble - it even used to be a
principality! Its cathedral and castle are designated world heritage sites. And it's an international centre of learning, with one of Britain's leading universities.
Tynedale District
Tynedale, in Northumberland, is the largest district council area in England. It's major towns include Hexham -
a market town, Prudhoe - a growing industrial town, and the former mining town of Haltwhistle. There are
commuter settlements within easy reach of Tyneside, parishes where forestry dominates and truly remote agricultural areas.
Tynedale contains much of the spectacular Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site and other areas of outstanding
natural beauty, including large parts of the Northumberland National Park, the North Pennines, Kielder Forest
(one of the largest forests in th UK) and Kielder Water (the largest man-made lake in Northern Europe).

Morpeth - Morpethnet
Stockton-on-Tees
Alnwick Garden
The site on which The Alnwick Garden is built has had a colourful history, with gardens being built here
designed by leading contemporary designers of their day. How fitting that The Alnwick Garden should have been classed by many as one of the finest public gardens to have been build in over 100 years.
Beamish
The North of England Open Air Museum, where the past comes to life. Beamish is unique. not an ordinary
museum but a living, working experience of life as it was in the Great North in the early 1800s and 1900s. Step on board of one of their trams and transport yourself into the past.
Coast And Countryside
Starting at the coast, there are beaches inhabited only by oyster catchers. There are fishing villages like
Seahouses and Craster, still working and full of character. Or there are seaside towns that grew - Alnmouth,
Seaton Carew and Tynemouth grew into Victorian resorts; Saltburn went as far as pier-and-prom status.
And Whitley Bay became an icon of Thirties railway posters! Or what about the countryside? Market towns
grew up around the castles - places like Alnwick, Barnard Castle and Staindrop all existed symbiotically with
the Big House. There are tiny villages that used to really matter - Escomb's Saxon Church, and Warkworth's giant church show their past status.
Durham and the Tees Valley - in the North East
An area of exciting contrasts. Whether you seek a country ramble over expansive moorland, sandy beaches
and towering cliffs, shopping and fine dining or to discover the heritage of smugglers haunts and famous
explorers. The Tees Valley area is so compact that you can really do all these things in a day or two.
The Tees Valley is at the heart of Captain Cook Country, on the doorstep of the North York Moors National Park, as well as a 'stone's throw' (30 miles) from Whitby, York, Durham and Newcastle.
The Tees Valley is an area encompassing the five historic boroughs of Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland and Stockton on Tees.
Kielder Water and Forest
Tucked away at the top of Northumberland, close to the Scottish Border and Hadrian's Wall, beautiful Kielder
Water is the largest man-made lake in Europe. Kielder Forest, one of Britain's biggest nature resorts, is home to red squirrels, deer and rare birds.
The lake fringes and forest glades can best be explored by walking, cycling or on horseback, and there are
many self-guided trails. Activities for all the family, a variety of accommodation, easy accessibility and
closeness to villages and Northumberland National Park are among the many attractions, making Kielder ideal for holidays or leisure pursuits, including fishing, boating, riding and watersports.
Lindisfarne - Holy Island
Modern Cities And Ancient Forests
And nearby, there are the cities - rich with new architecture and art, humming with activity, bristling with
shops and restaurants. There's open country, too - a National Park and two Areas of Outstanding Natural
Beauty; ancient forests like Kielder and Hamsterley; moorland and sheep-dotted pastures. Rivers like the Wear and the Tees rise high in the Pennines in exquisite wilderness.
Tees Forest
The Tees Forest is one of twelve community forests in England.
Tees Valley - Destination Tees Valley From the salmon rich reaches of the upper Tees to the coastal beauty and character laden sea ports. From
the Transporter Bridge's tribute to the area's engineering heritage to the untouched pleasures of the green
lanes. From lighthouses and ships to industrial innovation and a resilient enterprising spirit. They've got a lot to shout about in the Tees Valley.
Tyne and Wear

History of Northumbria
Northumbria played a vital role in the industrial revolution. The region's coalfields fuelled industrial expansion in
other areas of the country, and the need to transport the coal from the collieries to the Tyne lead to the development of the first railways. Many prominent engineers hailed from the area. See WikipediA for more.
Bedes' World Bede began his Ecclesiastical History of the English People, completed in 731, in the days of Roman Britain,
when Christianity first arrived in this island, and traced the thread of Christianity through the departure of the
Romans, the arrival of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes and the development and eventual conversion of the early Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. The Age of Bede exhibition follows the pattern of Bede's narrative.
Hadrian's Wall Country
Nearly 2000 years ago in 122 AD, the Emperor Hadrian embarked on a huge undertaking: to mark the northernmost boundary of Roman Britain with an unusually long fortified wall. Skirmishing tribes were
contained behind it for over 350 years and Hadrian's name written indelibly into the history of this evocative and diverse part of the UK.
Today, parts of Hadrian's Wall are still visible; the line of it stretching from Wallsend in the east to Bowness-on
-Solway in the west, and the fortifications continuing down the west coast to Ravenglass.
Train Rail - History, Heritage & Fun
Train Trail is eight uniquely different train attractions set within splendid North East countryside and easily
presented for you to create the perfect day out. Attractions are individually priced, several are totally free to enter.
Vindolanda
Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum bring history alive. Vindolanda is a fascinating Roman fort and
civilian settlement lying just to the south of Hadrian's Wall. The Roman Army Museum, situated beside one of
the best preserved sections of the Wall, offers a captivating insight into the garrisons of Hadrian's Wall. Don't forget to check out what is happening at the moment on our excavation news page.
Music, Art & Culture, Entertainment
The North East of England has many of its own traditions, not found elsewhere in England, including the
rapper sword dance, Clog dance and the Northumbrian smallpipes [ a type of bagpipe ] as well as its own
tartan (often referred to in Scotland as the Shephard's Tartan). Traditional Northumbrian music sounds similar to Scottish.

Lindisfarne Gospels
The Lindisfarne Gospels are one of the treasures of the Christian Church in Northumbria. They were
produced in the 7th. century by a monk called Eadfrith. He became Bishop of Lindisfarne in 698 and died in
721 at a time which is sometimes called the "Golden Age of Northumbria" when learning and artistic skills
were at a peak. This was the age in which the Venerable Bede wrote his "Ecclesiastical History" and in
which the great Celtic Saints like Aidan and Cuthbert carried out their missionary work for the conversion of the North.
