Basel is situated at the border triangle of Switzerland, Germany and France and forms together with the villages Riehen and Bettingen the canton of Basel-Stadt, whose capital it is.

  Birs - river
The Birs springs from a source at 760 meters altitude, south west of the Bernese Jura Tavannes. Here it is right away a real river as the water comes from an underground river system. The last part of the Birs is the separation between the two half cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft.

History

740 Basel became bishop city and the place undergone a stormy development mainly because the bishops of Basel were powerful people.
In 1501 Basel joined the Swiss confederation as a the Basel canton.

  Tinguely   -   Artist, sculptor, raised in Basel
Mainly known for his kinetic art. Nouveau Realist, a French art movement related to Pop Art movement. French Dadaism influence strongly felt in his work. Kinetic art is about "movements" in art.   Swiss Drumming
The festival, where all drummers whith hearts pledged to Swiss drumming have been looking for throughout the year, is the Basler Fasnacht.
Three days of drumming and parties in an atmosphere that is not to describe. The Fasnacht is the Carnival of Basel, where it's in a large part all about the music. Thousands of drummers and pipers are walking three days long through the city. In addition, they are dressed in the most fantastic outfits. An important part of this outfit is a mask which is made of a kind paper mache in which by painting a unique expression is created.
During the Basler Fasnacht mainly traditional marches are played. The groups (Cliquen) you see often crisscross each other. During Fasnach you can two types of groups: Traditional Cliquen and Guggemusik. See Basler Fasnacht.
