Guardamar del Segura - ca. 15 km long coastline with lovely sandy beaches
Typical Spanish town with some of the best beaches of Spain, magnificent dunes and natural areas.
Guardamar is a town which for centuries has managed to draw advantage from the vagaries of nature that
more than once it has shaken. Its strategic location at the mouth of the River Segura has largely helped to
determine the history of Guardamar. The archaeological site Cabezo Lucero, where the Dama de Guardamar
bust was excavated, proves that the Greek settlement later was inhabited by the Iberians. The Arabs had a settlement in the eastern part of town where you now can find the dunes.
The earthquake of 1829 swept the first full settlement of the map, so the 'guardamarencos' were forced to
find other places. They settled closer to the sea, where now the current Guardamar is located, and built new earthquake resistant homes.
Late 19th century encroaching sand dunes endangered the new town to become buried. People succeeded
to cut off the sand dunes by long lines of pine plants, a combination that made Guardamar del Segura a
unique place. Today, the eastern part of Guardamar del Segura is coccupied by the "Dunes of Guardamar, a
giant Forest Park of 840 ha that has been declared a Nature Reserve. Also worthwhile is a walk in the Reina
Sofia Park with its beautiful lakes, waterfalls and trails and where the indigenous fauna and flora can be admired. See Guardamar.net.
