Najera is located in the Rioja Alta, along the river Najerilla , which crosses and divides the city into two parts: left, the old town, the Barrio de Adentro, with its historical monuments; and right, the Barrio de Afuera, with modern buildings and large industrial extentions.
Both sides are connected by a footbridge and a stone bridge, the successor to San Juan de Ortega built in the twelfth century.

History of La Rioja

The territory of La Rioja was formerly known as the province of Logroño for the fortified site around which it developed. Logroño was a borderland disputed between the kings of Navarre and the kings of Castile starting in the 10th century;
