Extremadura [Illustrated]   -   Dirk Hilbers (Author)
Dirk Hilbers (1976) founded the Crossbill Guides Foundation and travels Europe for the production of the guidebooks. For this title, he spent a year in Torrejon el Rubio, in the heart of Extremadura, and guided bird and nature tours to the region. His Crossbill Guides Foundation is a European non-profit organisation dedicated to increasing public involvement with nature conservation. One of his goals is to produce comprehensive guides and other services for nature enthusiasts and tourists to all major European natural areas. Each guidebook is prepared by Dirk in consultation with local nature experts. He hopes that by sharing knowledge and enthusiasm with the visitor, this will deepen appreciation for Europe's splendid natural heritage and foster an understanding of the necessity of its conservation.

  Pork of Extremadura
Pata Negra, the best ham in the world, comes from the Iberian Pork. Although they are very precious, the small black pigs are not barricaded in buildings as livestock and shepherded all day, but rather live carefree and pasture in holm oak forests - and of course eat acorns that give them that unique savour.

History of Extremadura

History characterised the region of Extremadura and is a constituent part of it till today. Romans, Muslims, the re-conquest have left deep marks and bear witness to a colourful past.

Extremadura was the source of many of the most famous conquerors ("conquistadores") and settlers in America. Hernán Cortés, Francisco Pizarro, Pedro de Alvarado, Pedro de Valdivia, etc. were all born in Extremadura and many towns and cities in America carry a name from their homeland.
