The region occupies much of the Meseta, the vast and austere plateau in the centre of the Iberian peninsula. Here are many of Spain's finest cities, buildings and works of art. Lovers of Romanesque will feel particularly satisfied for there are many excellent examples of the style. Great Gothic churches are another magnificent feature, the cathedrals at León, Burgos, Segovia, Salamanca among them. French, German and English influences are to be found, though the end result is always unmistakably Spanish.
As well as the prominent cities, they include a number of lesser-known places, all strikingly attractive, many with outstanding buildings or works of art, all barely visited by tourists.

  Spain's Segovia, Salamanca & Castilla y León
Kelly Lipscomb (Author)
With the northern half of the Spanish Meseta all its own, this is unmistakably big sky territory. It is the largest autonomous region in Spain, covering a full one-fifth of the country's territory, and is larger than some EU countries, including neighboring Portugal. The Spaniards born in this sweeping mosaic of tableland hemmed by mountains are credited with speaking the purest Castellano tongue. They gravitate toward the major cities of the region, Burgos ,Valladolid, León and Salamanca, leaving vast tracts of land empty of all but shepherds and barley growers. They pray in two of the country's three greatest Gothic cathedrals in León and Burgos, study at one of the world's oldest and most influential universities in Salamanca, cast for five-pound trout in the Río Duero and excavate the remains of Europe's oldest inhabitants in the Sierra de Atapuerca.  The stereotypes of Castilla y León paint but a small picture of this vast realm. Pilgrims have trudged along the main route of the Camino de Santiago since the ninth century, a period when Christian Spain was in the midst of consolidating its forces to drive the Moors from the peninsula. Burgos would serve as the capital of the crown during the early Reconquest and eventually would be joined with the separate kingdom of León in furthering the cause.

History of Castile-Leon

The region is formed by the union of two ancient kingdoms: Kingdom of Castile and Kingdom of León, several times separated and reunited in the Middle Ages.

Kingdom of Castile   -   Wikipedia   -   A former kingdom of Spain
Castile comprises the two regions of Old Castile in northwestern Spain, and New Castile in the center of the country...
  Kingdom of Leon   -   Wikipedia
In 913 an independent Kingdom of León was founded when the Christian princes of Asturias along the northern coast of the peninsula shifted their main seat from Oviedo to the city of León. They turned their back on the unnavigable Atlantic, infested with Vikings and sea monsters, and settled in the meseta, the high tableland of central Spain...
  Legend of Santiago
Legend has it that, following the death of the Apostle Santiago, whose burial was forbidden in the land of Herod Agrippa, his followers placed his body on a boat which an Angel led to Finisterre Hispano. This legend has been repeatedly backed by the Christian church.
Only at the time of the Reconquista did people begin to talk about Galicia as the burial place of the Apostle Santiago. At the beginning of the 9th century, during the reign of Alfonso II El Casto of Asturias, Bishop Teodomiro discovered the remains of the Apostle, having followed a trail of stars in the sky. The Monarch ordered a church to be built in the place where the remains were found. This church later became the Catedral de Santiago de Compostela that we know today.
The news spread like wildfire beyond Spain and there was great rejoicing by believers and monarchs of the time. This discovery was the chance for spiritual reorganisation throughout Europe.

  Saint Teresa of Avila [ March 28, 1515 – October 4, 1582 ]
Saint Teresa of Jesus, baptized as Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada, was a prominent Spanish mystic, Roman Catholic saint, Carmelite nun, and writer of the Counter Reformation, and theologian of contemplative life through mental prayer. She was a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is considered to be, along with John of the Cross, a founder of the Discalced Carmelites. See Wikipedia.

The passing of the seasons, the harvests, the calendar of saints' days and the commemoration of historical events provide a range of cultural activities that seems to go from strength to strength as time goes by. Fiestas demonstrates the hospitality and openness of the people of Castilla y León.
