Cuisine   -    Canary Islands Recipes

On islands, fish is a vital component of the dishes and the Canary Islands are no exception. The local fish is of a high quality : damselfish, sea bass, dentex, white sea bream, wreckfish, bogue, mackerel... and most importantly, parrot fish.

The climate in the Canary Islands is perfect for the cultivation of tropical fruit. Like banana, papaya, melon pear, peach, mango, avocado and pineapple.

History of the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands were first discovered by ancient Greek and Roman seafarers, yet it was not until the early 1400s that anyone made a serious attempt to conquer the Canaries.

The islands were named Canaria (Latin canis, dog) because of the descriptions of the large numbers of wild dogs roaming the islands, first reported by the Roman scholar Pliny

Music, Arts & Culture, Events

The Canary Islands are supposed to have given birth to the Greek myth of the Garden of Hesperides.

The islands retain some of the megalithic monuments among which the talayots, the navetes and taules, all from the period between 1800 and 1500 a. C. Little remains of the Muslim era.

  Garden of Hesperides
In Greek mythology, the Hesperides are nymphs who tend a blissful garden in a far western corner of the world.  They were entrusted with the care of the tree of the golden apples which was first presented to the goddess Hera by Gaia (Earth) on her wedding day. They were assisted in their task by a hundred-headed guardian drakon named Ladon. See Theoi.com
