Algarve - Landscapes Countryside Guide - Brian Anderson, Eileen Anderson
Away from the busy beaches, the Algarve has a countryside full of interest and beauty, quietly awaiting
discovery. From flowers and fountains, hilltops and history, to windmills and water-mills, this book will set
your feet wandering to find them all. There are car tours, too, to get you out and about, searching out little
-known points of interest-like the huge rose compass (rosa dos ventos) on the barren promontory of Sagres,
where Prince Henry the Navigator founded his school of navigation, or the Moorish castle and old Roman
bridge at Paderne. But don't think for one moment that we have turned our backs on and ignored the beautiful
and rugged western coastline. Wherever it is still unspoilt and free from development, the authors have incorporated it into a walk.

Faro - City of Faro
The long strip of dunes that separates the sea from the Ria Formosa is a paradise for anyone who enjoys
sun, sand and sea. With the advantage that visitors can choose from a necklace of separate islands, and have mile after mile of sandy beaches all to themselves. * Ilha de Faro:
linked to the mainland by a road, this island has a small nucleus of beach houses, restaurants and other tourist facilities. * Ilha de Barreta:
this island is truly calm and solitary. Thanks to the fact that there are no regular ferry connections. It is an excellent destination for anyone who has hired a boat or is lucky enough to have their
own and who wants to enjoy the pleasures of sea and sand undisturbed by other holidaymakers. * Ilha do Farol:
apart from a few fishermen's cabins, there is nothing on these islands but sand... * Culatra:
a former fishing village, until a few decades ago the houses of Culatra had wooden walls and
thatched roofs. Fishing still goes on, and shell fish are harvested from the Ria. There is an extensive beach
which is quiet, with a family atmosphere. Regular steam boat services run to the Farol and Culatra beaches from Faro [ summer ] and Olhão [ all year ].

Cuisine
The Algarve cuisine dates back to the historical times of the Roman and Arabic. The ingredients used reflect the fresh flavors of the sea and the pleasant, strong aromas from the land.
Away from the coast, in the hills and valleys of the "Serra" and "Barrocal" can be found on the menu less
seafood than on the coast. Here you find more traditional fare consisting of venison, smoked or otherwise preserved meats and much-loved national dishes.
