National Park

 National Park De Utrechtse Heuvelrug 
The Utrechtse Heuvelrug is a wooded ridge (an Esker caused by the Ice Age) that runs from the Gooimeer at Huizen to the Grebbelberg at Rhenen. It is easily recognisable in the landscape from whichever way one approaches. The highest point of the ridge lies in Amerongen: 69 metres above NAP (Normaal Amsterdams Peil). At the moment only that part south of Driebergen, an area of 6,000 hectares, has the status of National Park. The National Park consists of hills and valleys on sandy ground. The gradual transition zone from the ridge to the valley of Nederrijn is unique in the Netherlands. At the foot of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug lies the Stichtse Lustwarande which is a series of estates and country houses dating from the early 19th century.
The Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park has a lot to offer hikers and cyclists. Extensive woodlands, meadows, heaths, inland dunes, barrows, castles, fens and breathtaking vistas over the riverland and the Gelderse Vallei. And if you're lucky you might even see the Pine Marten (Martes martes), woodpeckers (Picus) or even deer.

Cuisine - Dutch cooking - Recipes

Vijfschaft is een typisch Utrechts gerecht.
Waar het woord 'vijfschaft' vandaan komt, is niet precies bekend. Aangenomen wordt dat de naam van het gerecht is afgeleid van het woord 'schaft', dat staat voor een maaltijd tussen de werktijden, en dat vijf wellicht het uur aangeeft waarop de maaltijd gegeten werd. Er is overigens ook nog een gerecht dat zevenschaft heet.
