National Parks

  Dunes of Texel National Park
Duinen van Texel National Park covers an area of 4,3000 hectares and, just like the rest of Texel, well known for the variety of birds here. The lengthy dune area contains vegetated strand (De Slufter), woodlands, heaths, and a large flat of sand to the south
(De Hors). The Duinen van Texel has always been a popular area for nature-lovers and boasts a wide network of trek, cycle and horse-riding paths.
The main visitor's centre is being built within 'EcoMare', the centre for Wadden and North-Sea. There will also be four additional information points at various locations around the island
  National Park Zuid-Kennemerland
In the dunes of the province of Noord-Holland, between IJmuiden and Zandvoort, lies Zuid-Kennemerland National Park which encompasses an area of 3,800 hectares. This oasis in the busy Randstad (as the densely populated area between the cities of Amsterdam, Utrecht and The Hague is known), is much loved by the many local people who come here to walk and cycle. During the summer months there is plenty of opportunity to swim in the dune lake 'Het Wed' or of course in the North Sea itself.
The visitors centre is situated in Overween in an industrial monument dating from 1898. This building, originally used for housing machinery from the Haarlem Waterworks, has been beautifully restored and is now called 'Duincentrum De Zandwaaier'.

Much of Noord-Holland is below sea level and it contains a series of polders that is illustrative of the famous Dutch approach to land reclamation. In Noord-Holland this reclamation started around 1600 AD, before then half of the area consisted of wate
Noord-Holland is also famous for Schiphol Airport, one of the major gateways to Europe. Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is also situated in the province. However, Amsterdam is not the capital of Noord-Holland – that is Haarlem, were the provincial government building is situated.
