Holidays in Drenthe  -  Travel Information Drenthe.

Municipalities in Drenthe : Aa en Hunze, Assen, Borger-Odoorn, Coevorden, De Wolden, Emmen, Hoogeveen, Meppel, Midden-Drenthe, Noordenveld, Tynaarlo, Westerveld

Province of Drenthe, located in the north-east of the Netherlands. It is bordered by the province Overijssel in the south, the province Friesland in the west, the province Groningen in the north, and Germany in the east.

Drenthe is very popular mainly because of its peace and quietness and its open spaces, not only for holidays, but also as an area to live and work in. In particular, the beautiful scenery with stretches of woodland and forest in ever-changing density, the moors covered in purple heather, the fens and the charm of the villages with their typical farming aspects, are all highly beloved and appreciated. The province is closely involved in preserving this valuable scenery and involved in the management of the national parks like the 'Dwingelderveld' and the 'Drents-Fries Wold'. The province is also active in developing new areas of natural and outstanding beauty. The setting-up of an ecological masterplan, to connect the natural areas with one another, is high on the provincial agenda.

National Parks

 National Park De Weerribben
De Weerribben National Park, situated near Steenwijk in the north-west of Overijssel, is one of the 'wet' national parks of the Netherlands. Together with the neighbouring nature reserve De Wieden, it forms one of the most important marshland area of Northwest Europe. The present landscape of the Weerribben is a result of the turf-digging industry. The landscape is varied: open water, sedge grasslands, meadows and marsh woodlands. As a result, the Weerribben, the flora and fauna is very diverse. It is one of the few areas in the Netherlands where the Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas) can be found. The Otter has recently been re -introduced to the area this year. Although these are rather shy, there are plenty of other interesting animals and plants to admire in De Weerribben, whether by boat, bicycle or walking.
 National Park Drentsche AA
The Drentsche Aa meanders through the typical Drenthe esdorp landscape, as it has for centuries, a stream that winds through a landscape with farms clustered around the village square, fields on rolling hills, hayfields and meadows down in the valley. It is one of the best preserved valley landscapes in Western Europe with a rich natural and cultural history. It is for this reason that the area was proclaimed a National Park in 2002 but a park with a wider purpose. Agriculture and nature continue to go hand in hand in this area.
The Drentsche Aa national stream and esdorp landscape fits roughly into the triangle between Assen-Gieten -Glimmen. It covers at least 10,000 hectares of which one third is nature reserve. The remainder is used for agricultural purposes and for building as well as private ownership.
A walking or cycling trip through the are is worthwhile for many reasons with views of old villages, grasscovered knolly areas, woods, heaths, burial mounds, megalithic structures (hunebedden), fens, flowercovered meadows with scatterings of orchids, and the wider vistas out over the stream's valleys.
 National Park Drents-Friese Wold
On the border between the provinces of Friesland and Drenthe lies Drents-Friese Wold National Park, the second largest woodland area in the Netherlands.
Within these extensive woodlands one can find beautiful inland dunes, the Aekingerzand. This area lies next to a recently restored valley and a beautiful fen, De Grenspoel. But the beautiful moorlands of Doldersum and Wapse are also worth mentioning. Butterflies such as the Alcon Blue (maculinea alcon) and the Dwarf Rattlesnake Plantain of the orchid family (Goodyera repens) are just two examples of the special flora and fauna to be found in the park.
More than one million tourists visit this park of 6,100 hectares annually. There are as many as 32 marked walks, and also many cycle paths and horse-drawncart and nature paths. Visitors can watch out for unusual bird sorts from the watch towers in Doldersumveld and De Aekingerzand. The visitor's centre can be found in Appelscha and there's also an information centre in Diever.
 National Park Dwingelderveld
The Dwingelderveld National Park lies in the green south-west of Drenthe and was established in 1991. This nature reserve encompasses an area of 3,692 hectares and is renowned for being the largest moorland
on the contintent. On the moors, but also in the woodlands, there are more than sixty beautiful fens to be found. The mysterious Juniper shrubs are impressive and form the background for many a legend. Nature's
diversity here allows hundreds of different sorts of plants and animals to thrive, many of which are otherwise threatened in our country.
The Dwingelderveld is extremely popular with tourists and attracts over one and a half million visitors each year. They can take advantage of the 60 km. of walks and 40 km. of cycle paths. Visitors can learn more
about the history and special features of the park in any of the three visitor's centres.

History of Drenthe

Drenthe has been populated since the prehistory. Most tangible evidence of this are the dolmens (hunebedden), built around 3500 B.C. 52 of the 54 dolmens in the Netherlands can be found in Drenthe, concentrated in the northeast of the province. After long being subject to the bishops of Utrecht, it came under control of Charles V in the 16th century. When the Republic of the Seven United Provinces was declared, Drenthe became part of it, although it did not gain provincial status until January 1, 1796.
