Some people enjoy coming to Sicily by ship; From Northern Europe & Italy, it is possible to take a confortable fast ship from Genoa harbour [ Tirrenia ] and reach Palermo in about 17/18 hours. Frequent ferries from Naples to Milazzo and one daily from Ravenna [ adriatic northern coast ] to Catania as well as modern speed boats and catamarans daily from Malta To Catania and Pozzallo are available too.

Stazione Centrale, the main station in Palermo, is near the centre. Most of the long-distance buses leave from just round the corner [ AMAT   -   Palermo's public bus system ].

The Festino is the most important religious event of the year in Palermo with a procession in the main street of Palermo to remember the miracle attributed to Santa Rosalia who, it is believed, freed the city from the Black Death in 1624. When her relics were carried around the city three times, the plague was lifted.
