It's the northerly island of the Ionian Group and lies at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea. It is the second largest island of the Ionians. It is a mountainous island with impressive landscapes, dense vegetation due to many rainfalls in winter, long golden sandy beaches, one of Greece's most beautiful towns, many traditional villages, Byzantine churches, several museums, impressive Venetian fortresses and lively resorts all around the island.

Present day Corfu is an excellent destination for families, adventurers and sport lovers alike and manages to condense all that characterises the Ionian Islands.

The Municipality of Corfu is located at the center of the eastern side of the island of Corfu. It is the oldest municipality on the island and one of the olders in Greece.
In 1997 the Municipality of Corfu was characterized "Kapodistriac" and under the new conditions its borders were enlarged to include the communities of Alepou, Evropouli and Kanalia. The Municipality of Corfu includes the urban sectors of: Analipsis, Kanoni, Figareto, Stratia, Gouvia, Kontokali, Kyra Chrisikou, Potamos, Temploni and also the islands of Vido and Lazareto.

A small island nearby Paxos, famous for its wine, which is almost impossible to purchase in shops or tavernas, and two of the finest sandy beaches in the Ionian Sea.

Paxos, the baby of the Ionian Islands, is a cluster of small islands and rocky islets, the largest of which are Paxi and Antipaxos .They are located 7 miles south of Corfu, at a distance of 8 miles from the coast of Epirus in nort–western Greece and 12 miles from the town of Parga.

History of Corfu

The island's obvious beauty has shaped its history for it has been fought over by almost any nation to have ever taken up arms – from the Romans to Napoleon, Russia and of course, the British. Corfu Town, the island's capital, best illustrates these many occupying influences. French-style arcaded buildings flank a green esplanade and cricket pitch. Georgian mansions and Byzantine churches complete the picture. The delightful old town, wedged between two vast fortresses is perhaps more reminiscent of Venice than Greek towns
