The Benedictine Abbey and Altenmünster of Lorsch were the first UNESCO-listed Hessian World Heritage sites. The completely preserved Carolingian gatehouse, also referred to as King's Hall, counts amongst the foremost examples of pre-Romanesque architecture in Hessen.

History

In the early Middle Ages, Hesse was a part of Thuringia, but in the War of the Thuringian Succession (1247 -64) Hesse gained its independence and became an earldom within the Holy Roman Empire.

  Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt  
One of Germany's oldest public museums. The exhibits range from the Messel Propalaeotherium to the largest body of works by Joseph Beuys. In addition, it also features the "Forest of Sculptures", a unique collection of sculptures, donated to the State of Hessen by Swiss art collector Simon Spierer in 2004.
