Turner on the Seine  -  Ian Warrell
Turner published two volumes of views of the River Seine in the early 1830s, when he was at the height of his success. All of the watercolours he completed for the project are reproduced in this book, along with many of his preliminary studies. As the text demonstrates, the watercolours are born out of Turner's long familiarity with the river. His views came as part of an explosion in the market for travel books, particularly for the area between Paris and the coast, and a number of these comparable publications, with their illustrations by some of Turner's finest rivals, are discussed. The book also examines how Turner confronted the technical innovations of the new age, making contemporary features, such as canals and steamboats, the subjects of his pictures, and thereby preparing the ground for masterpieces such as "The Fighting Temeraire".

Situated less than 15 kilometres south of Paris, between the departments of Yvelines and Seine-et-Marne.
The department is made up of four distinct natural regions: the Hurepoix over much of the north-west, the Brie in the far north-east, the Beauce in the south-west and the Gâtinais Français in the south-east.

The 1800s, a century of industrialization, saw its start in the area of town called Bas-Montreuil or Lower Montreuil with the first factory opening in 1818. By 1872 there were over 70 factories operating in Montreuil, specializing in everything from soap, dyes, procelaine, and glassware to brick and plaster, furiers, and woodwork and carpentry shops.
A great part of the historical contribution of Montreuil to the world revolves around film. Three Montreuil residents were particularly influential in this realm of activity: Emile Reynaud [ the father of animation ], Georges Méliès [ built the world's first film studio in 1896 ], Charles Pathé [ one of the first big-time film producers ].
