A Vineyard in the Dordogne: How an English Family Made Their Dream of Wine, Good Food and Sunshine Come True
Jeremy Josephs A generation ago, the Ryman family arrived in the Dordogne to follow a dream. To live in France. To make
excellent wine in a vineyard of their own. And to have an elegant chateau as a home. Is this not everyone's
secret desire? It did not take them long to discover and fall in love with Chateau de la Jaubertie, a beautiful
400 year old country mansion, built from soft golden sandstone and set in the heart of the lush green valley of
the Dordogne. Together, the family, Nick Ryman a multi-millionaire from selling his stationery business, his wife
Anne, a professional cordonbleu cook, and their three children Hugh, Corinne and Camilla the Rymans
embarked on a search for a new life a la francaise. But they had not anticipated the steep learning curve
required to deal with the local French people and their customs; nor the passions and rifts that were to erupt
within the family. In taking a vineyard producing barely drinkable wine they created the finest wines in
Bergerac, thereby beating the French at their own game but the family would never be the same again - the search for their dream almost tore them apart.
Paperback 303 pages (May 31, 2002); Publisher: Metro Books,London; Language: English; ISBN: 1843580187.
The Caves of Perigord by Martin Walker [ thriller ]
A brilliant novel about the discovery of a fragment of a prehistoric cave painting that leads back to an episode
of tragedy and heroism in WWII - and to the creation of the painting itself, 17,000 years ago. A piece of
prehistoric stone art from the same period as the famous Lascaux cave paintings - 17,000 years ago - is
brought to a London auction house by the son of a British hero of world War II, whose father left it to him. A
storm of publicity ensues, which is only increased by the disappearance of the painting. Even the President of France becomes involved. ISBN: 0743430328

Roque Saint-Christophe - troglodyte fort & town
In one of the most beautiful landscapes of the Périgord, halfway between les Eyzies and Montignac, the
enormous cliff of the "Roque Saint-Christophe" rises to a peak above the Vézère River. This limestone wall,
one kilometer long and eighty meters high, has been endlessly eroded by the river and frost until it became carved of rock shelters and long and aerial terraces impressionally overhead.
These natural cavities were occupied by cave dwellers approximately 55 000 years ago. Later, during the
Middle Ages and up until the Renaissance Period, they gradually changed to become a fortress and protected town.
Few troglodytic sites in the world can compete in terms of age and extended area. The "Roque Saint-Christophe" remains one of the most original sites one can visit in the Périgord.
