Alsace-Vosges (Vacances S.)
by Herve Bride, Roland Kaltenbach, Anne-Marie Minvielle, Anne-Marie Monvielle
Bordered by the mighty Rhine to the east, Alsace is an expanse of thickly wooded greenery criss-crossed by streams and rivers. French with a touch of Teutonic tidyness, Germanic place names betray the region's dual identity and turbulent past. Follow the Route du Vin and do some wine tasting. Drink in the spectacular scenery on the Route des Cretes. Explore the medieval villages and ruined chateaux, or the rambling narrow streets of Strasbourg and Colmar. Go horse riding, hiking, cycling, or fishing. Try choucroute or tarte alsacienne, washed down with a glass of the local beer in a weinstube.

History  -  Alsace

In ancient times France was part of the Celtic territory known as Gaul or Gallia. Its present name is derived from the Latin Francia, meaning "country of the Franks," a Germanic people who conquered the area during the 5th century, at the time of the fall of the Western Roman Empire. It became a separate country in the 9th century ......

Music, Culture & Entertainment

Historically part of the Holy Roman Empire, the region has passed between French and German control numerous times, resulting in a rich cultural blend. It traditionally belongs, however, to the German Kulturkreis, as any glance at traditional buildings in the towns and villages and at place names will confirm.

  Discover France   -   French Music
The earliest French influence on Western music is found in the plainsong of the Christian Church. It is believed that Gregorian chant as it is known today is an 8th- or 9th-century Gallican interpretation of Roman chant, but it is difficult to distinguish the Gallican ornamentation from its Roman basis. It has been suggested that the basic idea of the trope (an interpolation in a preexistent chant) is Gallican and that the surviving body of medieval tropes and sequences had a French influence ........
